Padilla returns to help pitching-starved Rangers

Quote:
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Pitcher Vicente Padilla is staying with the Texas Rangers, agreeing to a $33.75 million, three-year contract Saturday that includes a $12 million club option for 2010.

The signing keeps one of the top free-agent starters with a team desperate for pitching. Padilla went 15-10 with a 4.50 ERA.

"It's exciting to have Vicente back in the fold for the next few years," general manager Jon Daniels said. "He was a horse for us last year, and demonstrated he can pitch and win in our park."

A preliminary agreement was reached on the first day of the winter meetings last week.

Padilla threw 200 innings and set a career high for wins. After beginning his career with Arizona, the 29-year-old right-hander pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies from 2000-05, making the NL All-Star team in 2002.

He will pitch in the rotation behind right-hander Kevin Millwood. Millwood went 16-12 with a 4.52 ERA last season, his first with the Rangers, after being the team's key free-agent addition.

The Rangers, who have not made the playoffs since 1999, went 80-82 and were third in the AL West. They had a team ERA of 4.60, eighth of 14 AL teams.
Isn't he the one that kept hitting Chicago White Sox players? The contract sounds okay. Nothing spectacular.

ya, but solid for this year's crop of players. He won't take them to the playoffs by any means though.

This is a move that doesn't make me happy. Padilla had a chance to leave the Rangers organization and move onto a better/worse team. His arm will now be wasted as a ranger sense he is no ace but the Rangers will try and use him as one. Plus the contract sucks and doesn't benifit Padilla enough.

Ya, he isn't an ace by any means, but a solid #2 or awesome #3...he will do ok there, maybe 14-8 with an era of 4.2??
