Randolph suspended, apologizes for obscene gesture

Quote:
TORONTO -- The Portland Trail Blazers did not wait for the NBA to act against forward Zach Randolph.

In an unorthodox move, the Trail Blazers on Saturday suspended Randolph one game without pay for his actions at the end of Friday's game at Indiana.

A native of Marion, Indiana, Randolph fouled out with 15 seconds left in the 108-95 loss. As he walked off the court, he made an obscene gesture toward fans behind the scorer's table.

After the game, Randolph regretted his actions.

"I was frustrated there at the end of the game," he said. "That shouldn't happen and I apologize for that and it won't happen again."

In virtually all cases of players exhibiting unacceptable behavior toward fans, the NBA issues the punishment, whether it be a fine, suspension or both.

According to a team spokesman, the Trail Blazers -- who have had a handful of similar issues with their players over the last couple of seasons -- initiated the action and discussed it with league officials, who were in approval.

Portland's leading scorer (25.9 points) and rebounder (10.2), Randolph will sit out Sunday's contest vs. the Toronto Raptors. The suspension will cost him $133,333, or 1/90th of his annual salary of $12 million.
Meh. I've always thought he wasn't that smart.

lol, ya, he is very good though. He is now probably one of the top 10 pure forwards in the league.

This is very typical NBA behavior, which is getting pretty old by now and annoying. It's like everytime I check out ESPN someone is being spoken about being suspended, which makes the NBA look bad. I would say NBA has passed out the most suspensions in the last 5 years which is pathetic. David Stern better check it out and make the punishment much worse.

Now, on topic, Zach Pandolph is a anger person and it was only a matter of time he flipped out on the wrong people. He deserved his punishment and probally some more as well.

Randolph is a great player and it was smart of him to aplogize, he deserves a suspension, and it should teach him a bit....good luck to him though as he's a great player...

Ya Styles he was smart to apologize but what makes me mad is all players do it once the NBA or any other sports gets on their ass and suspends them and basically forces them to say sorry ect, which makes no sense becuase they did what they did for a reason, saying sorry is only saving there ass's. Just if it was actually from the heart I would feel bad for Randolph.
