J.D. Drew signs with Red Sox

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- J.D. Drew and the Boston Red Sox culminated weeks of negotiations by reaching a preliminary agreement Tuesday on a $70 million, five-year contract.

Drew will receive $14 million annually in the deal, which is subject to a physical. He gives the Red Sox a powerful middle of the batting order alongside David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez -- if Ramirez isn't traded.

"He's going to be a contributor. They had two big sluggers, righty-lefty, Ortiz and Ramirez," agent Scott Boras said. "J.D. has a great on-base percentage. He gives you a quality at-bat. He's an RBI guy. And he's really going to add a defensive component to that team that is, I think, really going to enhance their play, what they do both with arm strength and his ability to cover ground in the outfield. And his baserunning -- he can run a little bit. He is going to steal 20 or 30 bases. He's going to bring a dimension there."

Boras also represents Daisuke Matsuzaka. Boston bid $51,111,111 for his rights and has until Dec. 14 to reach an agreement. The pitcher's current team, the Seibu Lions, receives the money only if the Red Sox and Matsuzaka strike a deal.

"I think it's going to take a cooperative effort from three parties to get something done on this," Boras said.

Well I guess this confirms Manny getting traded, J.D. Drew is a good athlete and will do well in Boston, but he will never be able to replace Manny, and the Ortiz + Drew line-up will never even be close to matching up the Ortiz + Rameriz line-up...

Thoughts?

I know this might sound racist, but its not. Hispanics are dominating in the MLB right now. Drew is good, unless he gets hurt once again, but I've seen him play alot with ATL and the LAD. Nice Defense and great bat, might be a good fit becuase hes not all about power.

it is true, but not racist. Drew has been injured too much, and the stats are more appealing than the player imo...he's ok, but not great, and certainly not Manny if we trade him.

Well, they are definetly going to have some offense if Drew can stay healthy and that is without a doubt a big if.

Their offense is not really their problem though. We will have to wait and see if Matsuzaka pans out (if they can get him to come over in the first place) and other young guys and free agents that will be part of their pitching this season.

They got 9 more days to sign Matsuzaka and if they don't they get the 53 million they bidded on him, but again he's up for bidding and this would give the Yanks a shot at him knowing what they would have to bid, if that happens Red Soxs are not going to win two bigs against the Yankees...
