NEW YORK -- Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins is the second player to win consecutive NHL Rookie of the Month honors to start a season since the award was instituted in 1983-84.

The Russian center recorded seven goals and six assists in 14 games in November after posting five goals and four assists in October.

The first rookie to open the season with back-to-back monthly awards was Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Ron Hextall in October and November 1986.

Malkin began the month in historic fashion on Nov. 1 in Los Angeles, becoming the first player in 89 years to tally goals in each of his first six games. He added the game-winning goal at 2:45 of overtime in the Penguins' 4-3 victory. Malkin also tallied multiple points in a 6-3 loss to Ottawa on Nov. 10 (one goal, one assist), a 5-3 victory at Philadelphia on Nov. 20 (two assists) and a 4-3 shootout loss to Boston on Nov. 22 (one goal, one assist).

Centers Anze Kopitar of the Los Angeles Kings, Paul Stastny of the Colorado Avalanche and defenseman Shane O'Brien of the Anaheim Ducks were also considered for the award.

He has to be the runaway choice for the Rookie of the year, I see no way in hell that he could lose it unless he got injuried and was out for the season. Pittsburgh is lucky to have him among Crosby and Staal three great young athletes....

Thoughts?

he deserves it. He, Crosby, and Staal,, along with Joe Thornton, are the only people that make me even conisder watching the NHL. Up unti lthis year, it stunk, but they have a bright future, and have made me not afraid to admit, like it used to be, that I am a Penguins fan.
