Boxing: Harrison tipped for ring return

Harrison tipped for ring return

Scott Harrison's father and trainer says his son will definitely get back in the ring despite a torrid 2006.

The Scot spent five weeks in a Spanish jail on assault charges and experienced problems with alcohol and depression.

He was then forced to give up his WBO featherweight crown after failing to make the weight for his scheduled clash with England's Nicky Cook in December.

"People who think Scott is finished are wrong, he'll definitely come back," Peter Harrison told BBC Scotland.

"There's no timetable but once he's back in the ring, you wouldn't know he's been away."

Harrison junior has struggled to make nine stone for some time and his father said he could even return as a lightweight, nine pounds heavier.

"He never lost his title, he vacated it because he could no longer make the weight," said Harrison senior.

"Once he starts boxing again we'll check out what the best weight is for him.

"Can he do super featherweight? Or we'll we just move up to lightweight, which would be no problem for Scott."

A clash with European super featherweight champion and fellow Scot Alex Arthur would be a big money-spinner.

But Frank Warren, who promotes Arthur and used to handle Harrison, has ruled out any future involvement with the troubled fighter.

In the meantime, Harrison senior said the best thing his son could do was take a complete break from the sport.

"He's chilling out from boxing. He's not doing any training at all but he's in a good frame of mind," he added.

"He was world champion for four and a half years so it won't do him any harm to have a complete break from boxing.

"But I'm optimistic for Scott. That's what Scott does, he proves everybody wrong all the time."
