Before the Giants fire Tom Coughlin...

Here are a few things they need to consider:

1. They were the only team that made the playoffs whose opponents had a combined record above .500 (the Colts opponents were exactly .500)

2. Coughlin is only the second coach in Giants history to take the team to the playoffs two straight years. Bill Parcells was the first.

3. The Giants played every team that made the playoffs in the NFC, and 1 team that made the AFC playoffs. They also played the 9-7 Jaguars, the 8-8 Titans, and the 7-9 Falcons and Panthers.

4. They finished third in the division, one game behind the 9-7 Cowboys, and 2 games behind the 10-6 Eagles. however, their schedules were exacty the same, except for two games. The Giants played two first place teams (Seattle and Chicago), while the Cowboys played Arizona and Detroit, and the Eagles played the Niners and Packers. Those 4 teams were all below .500

5. Coughlin only has one year left on his contract.

6. Their top 2 choices for the job, Charlie Weis and Bill Cowher, will not be available to coach the team next year.

The talk in New york has all been about how Coughlin has to go, but I think the prudent thing to do would be to give him one more chance, and let's see what he can do with his back against the wall

As a devoted fan of the 8-8 Packers, I resent that.

I don't know, Tom. To a non-fan, the Giants looked like an absolute mess this year. They never seemed prepared, or on the same page at all, and the results were a whole pile of meltdowns. Given how much New Yorkers seem to hate Tom Coughlin, I can't see how he keeps his job.

PS. If some of the other playoff teams had gone 9-7 like the Giants, their opponents' collective records would be closer to .500 as well.

He also included the Lions in that post, who actually beat the Cowboys!

However Freak, Detroiters hate Matt Millen I think with more passion than NYers hate Coughlin, yet that shitty GM still has a job after 2 seasons of getting death threats. We'll see..

Completely agree.

Give the man one more chance to clean up the mess.

He's a hell of a coach and I think he can do it given the right amount of confidence in him from the organization.

I'm with Freak on this, I just don't see how he keeps his job.

For me the biggest problem for Coughlin was keeping his players in line. The game against the Titans summed it up. Buresss, Eli, Shockey and all the D were playing like lemons for the whole of the quarter and Coughlin sat there with a baffle dlook on his face and did nothing, even when Buresss went to the farm and looked like he wasn't interesting in catching a 3rd and 10 which gave the ball to the Titans.

Then Kiwanuka who had played ok makes a mistake which in all fairness was an honest mistake and Coughlin goes postal on the young kid and sets in his face all the while the real problems for the Giants, the Manning, Burress, Barber and Shockey of the organisation sit on their asses and moan about the team.

If I was the Giants I'd give a young co-ordinator the job and let him rebuild. To hell with Cowher he's all about getting paid and nothing else now, he's got his ring, I doubt he'd put his all into it.

Coughlin is a good disciplinarian coach and that is what the Giants needed. They were ridiculas.. But a disciplinarian can only take you so far. Soon players learn to ahte the coach and revert back to old undisciplined ways. Which is exactly what is happening in NY... A coach needs to be able to change with his team!! And Coughlin is uncapable of that... I want his head on a platter and I want it now!!

With that said, the decision to keep or fire Coughlin will most likely be made by the incoming GM. Which is NOBODY! The one guy from the Pats they wanted to interview, told them NO before he even interviewed..

P.S.
TIKI-PLEASE JUST ONE MORE YEAR!!!
