Zara Phillips, winner of the World Equestrian Games' three-day eventing title, was voted the British Broadcasting Corp.'s sports personality of the year, joining her mother, Princess Anne.
Phillips, 25, granddaughter of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II and 11th in line to the throne, wins the U.K.'s most prestigious annual sporting honor 35 years after Princess Anne earned a European title and the BBC prize for her horsemanship.
Phillips claimed individual gold on her horse, Toytown, at the games in Germany in August to add to the European crown she already held. Her performance also helped Britain take second spot in the team event.
``To win this is absolutely amazing,'' Phillips said at today's televised show from Birmingham, England.
Ryder Cup golfer Darren Clarke was second and world champion gymnast Beth Tweddle was third in a public vote by telephone and text message.
There were no soccer or rugby players among the final 10 nominees, while England cricketer Monty Panesar's chances of claiming the prize were harmed by his omission from the opening two Ashes Tests against Australia.
In other awards today, rugby league team St. Helens was named team of the year for winning the Challenge Cup and the Super League Grand Final, and its coach, Daniel Anderson, was coach of the year.
Arsenal forward Theo Walker, who was picked for the England World Cup soccer squad and never got on the field, was named the young sports personality of the year.
Top-ranked tennis player Roger Federer was voted overseas personality. Federer, from Switzerland, won 59 percent of the poll and No. 1-ranked golfer Tiger Woods got 41 percent.
Bjorn Borg, the 11-time Grand Slam tennis champion, received the lifetime achievement award.
Why did Walcott win the toungsters award, surly Micah Richards would have been a better choice, and personally I think Calzaghe should have won the main award

I would have voted Calzaghe too. Simply because Equestrianism is a sport where just a tiny fraction of the population have the open opportunity to raise to the sort of level that Zara Phillips has. Good luck to her and well done, but it's a win based on the huge amount of Brits that are very keen Royalists still and the fact that there were very very little obvious other candidates this year.
I'm glad Darren Clarke didn't win it though. For him really, he didn't want it and saw it just as a sympathy vote (which it almost certainly was). I don't know the gymnast at all.

I'm happy Darren didn't win it on a sympathy vote. I think he himself is quite glad he didn't get the win too.
Calzaghe should have been at least in the top three. And I don't know why Jenson Button was in contension, he's had an average season, but managed to win one race when the top two crashed out.
Walcott has been one of Arsenals best players when ever he comes on. he always makes an impact with his pace and skill. i can see him starting a lot of games next season on the left wing.

Just what personality did any of the candidates have?
Zara Phillips once stuck her tounge out whilst it was pierced. Beyond that just what personality does she exude?
The golfer guy, ok sad story but really personality???
Women biker, granted she may be a real laugh but I ain't heard of her.
Of the list if it was down to who deserved it most then Calzaghe has been overlooked for way too long, but if it was down to true personality it should have gone Jenson Button, a man with a voice and attitude. IMO the rest of the field (maybe Hatton/Taylor somewhat excluded) show just how boring British sportspeople are. That's why we're bottlers and not winners in my book.
Just what personality did any of the candidates have?
This is the gripe i've had about the award. It should be renamed the BBC Sports Person of the Year.
Andy Murray certainly would be in contension if it took in to account personality. At least Calzaghe got recognishion from us Welsh, as our sports personality of the year, having said that he only had to beat Ryan Giggs and Dai from Merthyr, who's a mean bowls player.
Walcott has been one of Arsenals best players when ever he comes on. he always makes an impact with his pace and skill. i can see him starting a lot of games next season on the left wing.
But hes only made a handfull of apperances, that shouldnt give him the award, maybe next year he would be a better choice
