Salary cap expected to go up $7M in 2007, '08

GRAPEVINE, Texas (Dec. 7, 2006) -- The NFL's salary cap is expected to go up by about $7 million per team in each of the next two seasons, reaching about $116 million for 2008.

The figures, which right now are approximations, were announced by members of the league's management council at a meeting with team financial officers.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the figures are subject to adjustment following a final accounting of revenues and other items that go into determining the new cap, which takes effect each March.

The current salary cap is just over $102 million, some $17 million higher than it was for 2005. The large jump came because of the extension to the labor agreement, reached last March after extensive bargaining between the NFL and its players' union.

It's expected to be about $109 million in 2007, then go up an additional $7 million the next year.
