Football: Championship Mid-Week Results & Review

Results & Reviews from The Championship games from Tuesday Night {28th November}

Quote:
Barnsley 2 - Southend 0

Simon Davey's dream start to management continued as goals from Brian Howard and Kyel Reid handed 10-man Barnsley a crucial win over Southend. Leon Knight fed Marc Richards, who provided a teasing cross for Howard to slot the ball home after 24 minutes.
Reid secured the win on 87 minutes with a free-kick from the right that eluded keeper Daryl Flahavan.
The West Ham loanee's joy was short-lived as he was sent off deep into injury time for a second booking.
Quote:
Burnley 2 - Leeds 1

Second-half goals from Gifton Noel-Williams and Andrew Gray saw Burnley end a three-game winless run against 10-man Leeds. The game came to life when Hayden Foxe was sent off on 52 minutes for handball - his second booking.
The Clarets took advantage of the extra man to go ahead when Noel-Williams fired home from the edge of the area.
Gray made it 2-0 with a neat finish from 12 yards and the home side held on despite David Healy's fierce late shot.
Quote:
Colchester 5 - Hull 1

Colchester's Chris Iwelumo scored four goals as Hull were thumped. But the hosts were forced to come from behind after Nicky Forster prodded home Craig Fagan's header on 16 minutes.
Iwelumo headed an equaliser three minutes later and after the break he gave his side the lead from the penalty spot after he had won the kick himself.
The superb Iwelumo set up Jamie Cureton to score from seven yards before he sidefooted his third goal and then completed the scoring with a header.

Norwich 3 - Leicester 1

Robert Earnshaw scored and created another to help Norwich beat Leicester. The Canaries had fallen behind in the first half when Patrick McCarthy headed in Danny Tiatto's free-kick.
Carl Robinson levelled when he nodded into the left corner from close range and after the break Earnshaw scored from 12 yards to put Norwich ahead.
And in the last minute Earnshaw's shot was parried by keeper Conrad Logan against Gareth McAuley and the ball nestled into the empty net.
Quote:
Preston 1 - Coventry 1

Preston moved to the top of the Championship despite being held by Coventry, who left it late to equalise. Striker David Nugent rose to meet a Danny Pugh cross and head the ball in off the bar in the 34th minute to put the hosts ahead.
The Sky Blues levelled with 10 minutes remaining when Dele Adebola slotted home left-footed from 12 yards.
But a point was enough for Preston to replace Cardiff, who lost to Stoke, at the summit of the division.
Quote:
QPR 1 - Sunderland 2

Sunderland grabbed a deserved win at Loftus Road thanks to an impressive first-half display. The visitors began brightly and Grant Leadbitter and Stephen Elliot missed good chances before Daryl Murphy headed home the opener from close range.
Kevin Gallen headed narrowly wide for QPR but Leadbitter made it 2-0 in first-half injury time when he rounded keeper Simon Royce and slotted in.
Substitute Ray Jones blasted QPR back into the game but Sunderland held on.
Quote:
Sheffield Wednesday 3 - West Brom 1

Sheffield Wednesday claimed a deserved win over struggling West Brom to give boss Brian Laws his first home victory. The home side scored twice in the opening 15 minutes with Glenn Whelan heading home and Madjid Bougherra doing the same from Kenny Lunt's cross.
Albion improved after the break and Jason Koumas' strike in the 88th minute gave his side hope.
But a late penalty from Steve MacLean condemned West Brom to their sixth defeat in nine games.
Quote:
Stoke 3 - Cardiff 0

Three second-half goals inside five minutes sealed victory for Stoke as Cardiff lost top spot in the table. Bluebird Michael Chopra blew the best first-half chance, and on 60 minutes Liam Lawrence found substitute Ricardo Fuller, who fired in a precision shot.
Poor defending at a corner let Lawrence smash in his first goal for the Potters, before Mamady Sidibe squeezed in a shot from the edge of the area.
Cardiff's Stephen McPhail then saw red for pushing Lee Hendrie in the face.
Quote:
Wolves 1 - Crystal Palace 1

Dougie Freedman returned to haunt former club Wolves with a late goal as Crystal Palace snatched a point. Winger Lewis Gobern's fortuitous free-kick should have been enough for Wolves to seal victory.
The 23-year-old's 63rd minute set-piece was intended as a cross but somehow managed to go straight in to notch his first senior goal.
And Wolves were made to pay when Freedman levelled with a tidy finish from Shefki Kuqi's knock-down.

Good night for Sunderland and Preston who now go top of the table.

Have seen the goals already and the Palace goal is probably the best of the night.

Will be interesting to see how Cardiff react after losing top spot to Preston.

Wednesday night results to follow later.

This is the lowest amount of goals we've scored at this stage of the season for six years. This is why they have to be high quality when we get them!!

Due to our position I have no idea on what is going on in the upper reaches of the league, I think I've given up on it this season!!
