Wednesday Champions League review

GROUP A

Chelsea qualified for the knockout stages despite their 1-0 defeat by Werder Bremen in Germany.

Per Mertesacker scored the home side's winner but the Blues will progress because of their superior head-to-head record over the Germans.

Holders Barcelona kept their hopes alive by beating Levski Sofia 2-0 and now need to beat Bremen at the Nou Camp in their final game to progress.

Ludovic Giuly and Andres Iniesta scored Barca's goals in Bulgaria.

GROUP B

Inter Milan secured their place in the last 16 with a narrow 1-0 win over Sporting Lisbon.

Argentine striker Hernan Crespo scored the vital goal for Inter in the first half at the San Siro.

Bayern Munich had already qualified but they failed to make sure of top spot after being held by Spartak Moscow.

Maxym Kalinichenko put Spartak ahead but two goals by Claudio Pizarro put Bayern in control before Radoslav Kovac made it 2-2 from close range.

The Russians still have a slim chance of finishing third and qualifying for the Uefa Cup but they have now gone 22 games without a win in this competition - a Champions League record.

GROUP C

Liverpool had to work hard to overcome a determined PSV Eindhoven side at Anfield - but their 2-0 victory means they will go through as group winners.

The match looked set for stalemate until Steven Gerrard rounded off a fine move to put the Reds ahead and Peter Crouch's late header sealed victory.

Goals from Alejandro Alonso, Lilian Laslandes and Julien Faubert helped Bordeaux beat Galatasaray 3-1.

The French side are now guaranteed third place and a Uefa Cup spot.

Former Fulham midfielder Junichi Inamoto pulled a late goal back for Galatasaray but they are still without a group win in this competition this season.

GROUP D

Valencia made sure of top spot with a comfortable 2-0 win over Olympiacos.

Miguel Angel Angulo and Fernando Morientes scored for Valencia and the result means the best that the Greek side can hope for is a Uefa Cup place.

Roma are not yet home and dry though after a shock defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Ukraine.

Ciprian Marica scored the winner for the Ukrainians, meaning Roma need a point from their final game against Valencia to reach the last 16.
