Aug. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis suffered a partially dislocated left shoulder during the first quarter of the National Football League team's preseason opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Portis, who set a franchise record with 1,516 rushing yards last season, was hurt while tackling Bengals defensive back Keiwan Ratliff after an interception. Portis, 24, only had one carry on Washington's opening possession.
Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said he didn't know how long Portis might be sidelined. Washington's first regular-season game is scheduled for Sept. 11 against the Minnesota Vikings.
``We're hoping for the best,'' Gibbs said during his news conference after the Redskins' 19-3 loss last night.
Portis, whose arm was in a sling at his post-game news conference, said he was frustrated about getting hurt in an exhibition game.
``It's football, it could have happened at any point to anybody,'' Portis said. ``But we're here all offseason. It doesn't take you that long to get in shape. Preseason is a time to evaluate people who are unproven.''
Portis said NFL teams shouldn't have to play four preseason games, a stance expressed recently by players including Jeremy Shockey and Tiki Barber of the New York Giants.
``Let's get rid of some of these games,'' Portis said. ``Four games is ridiculous. Then you have to play a 16-game season and then you have the playoffs after that. How much wear and tear can you take?''
Portis topped 1,500 rushing yards for the third time in his four-year National Football League career last season and scored 11 touchdowns to help the Redskins make the playoffs for the first time in six years.
Portis has rushed for 5,930 yards and 45 touchdowns in four NFL seasons with the Redskins and Denver Broncos.
Figures! I was planning on drafting this guy for my fantasy team.

In Clinton Portis' case, apparently not that much
I do, but I don't agree with him. From a players perspective, a maximum of 24 games can be quite a bit, especially at running back. From a fans perspective, I want more games.
