"We just want to see where he's at," Joe Dumars told the newspaper.
"I think he's in a situation now where he's got enough information from his doctors that he feels pretty comfortable," Saunders told the Detroit News. "You have the kid in L.A. (Ronny Turiaf ) that's had the same surgery, and there have been some other guys who have gone through it. I think if he had any hesitation, he wouldn't do it, knowing he has four kids and a wife." "I'm familiar with them, which is obviously a bonus," he said in a telephone interview. "It's a comfortable situation; that makes it attractive. It's not as much the team. It's if I feel I can do it. Suns | Suns? Spurs? Nets? | Thomas To Sign With Suns? Mar 1 - A league official who spoke with agent Arn Tellem yesterday said the Nets are Tim Thomas' first choice if the Bulls waive him today, reports the Newark Star-Ledger. However a league official told the newspaper that Thomas is headed to Phoenix.
GM John Paxson said the Bulls will only waive Thomas if he signs with a team in the West.
ESPN.com's Marc Stein, in the Midweek Edition of the Daily Dime, reports league rules prevent the Bulls from adding a formal clause to Thomas' buyout that prevents him from signing with an Eastern Conference team after being released. But the sides can strike a handshake agreement to that effect and apparently have. Suns | Pacers? Spurs? Heat? Nets? 76ers? Suns? | Will He Take Less Money To Be Home? Feb 28 - Tim Thomas believes his settlement with the Bulls is hours away and said there's a "pretty good chance" he'll play with the Nets, reports the Bergen Record. According to the newspaper, the Bulls could give Thomas much less than the roughly $5 million left on his deal if he picks the Nets or 76ers, whereas he'll likely get most, if not all, of his money if he chooses the Spurs or Suns.
"I'm taking into consideration the whole scenario," Thomas told the newspaper. "Playing with a good friend Vince Carter, with a great point guard like Jason Kidd and alongside Richard Jefferson and being at home, that's an opportunity nobody can give me. "I have to find the situation that's right for me."
"It is going to have to get done by Wednesday or not at all," John Paxson told the Chicago Sun-Times. "I'm still trying and hope to have it done." Hornets | | Time Runs Out For Spurs, Hornets Feb 24 - The Spurs nearly traded Brent Barry on Thursday afternoon in a multi-team deal that would have netted guard J.R. Smith, two NBA sources told the San Antonio Express-News. According to the newspaper, the deal was close enough to completion that Spurs officials initially told Barry he might not need to board the team's charter flight. The deal unraveled near the trade deadline.
After trading for Marc Jackson and Linton Johnson, Hornets coach Byron Scott said the team had another deal in the works, but it was completed five minutes after the deadline and the NBA did not approve it, reports the New Orleans Times-Picayune. According to The Oklahoman, both Hornets GM Jeff Bower and Byron Scott were visibly disappointed soon after the trade deadline. "We got it to the league five minutes after the clock and they said, 'No deal.'" Scott told the newspaper. "So it was squashed, and everybody in the room was a little disappointed. "There was not a lot of talk about him," O'Connor told the newspaper. "One of the reasons is because he hasn't played in a year. That's not something, as a [general manager], that I would look at and trust that he's going to be healthy." The Deseret Morning News reports that Boozer was widely rumored to be part of discussion with the Lakers and Warriors that might have sent Boozer to Los Angeles and perhaps sent forward Troy Murphy and guard Derek Fisher to Utah. According to the newspaper, it's believed that trade talks never got beyond the initial 'what-about-this?' stage. | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Jamal Mashburn
76ers | | Sixers Seek Salary Cap Relief Feb 24 - Billy King told the Philadelphia Daily News yesterday that the Sixers will apply to the league office to have Jamal Mashburn's $10 million salary removed from the team's salary cap. According to the newspaper, at whatever point Mashburn's money comes off the books, the team will be in better position to sign Willie Green for the remainder of the season. Mashburn last played on March 7, 2004. | | Thursday, February 23 | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Kevin Garnett
Timberwolves | Knicks? | Knicks Target Garnett Feb 23 - Some league executives suggested yesterday's deal for Steve Francis was part of a risky long-term strategy by Isiah Thomas to trade for Kevin Garnett this summer, reports Newsday.
According to the newspaper, one NBA GM said Thomas sold Knicks owner James Dolan on a strategy to stockpile as many marketable assets as possible to make a play for Garnett, who has grown increasingly restless with the Timberwolves.
"There will be plenty of changes this summer," one team official told the New York Daily News. "Now, there is more to use in trades." Dwane Casey said yesterday that Kevin Garnett is not on the market, as far as the coach is concerned, despite vague reports nationally speculating otherwise, reports the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "He's not tradable for me," Casey told the newspaper. "It'd be just like saying, 'Is Michael Jordan tradable for Chicago?' Kevin Garnett is not the issue with us right now." | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Etan Thomas
Wizards | Bulls? | Wizards Gauge Interest In Thomas Feb 23 - According to a league source, the Wizards have made calls gauging interest in Etan Thomas, reports the Washington Post. I don't think there's any truth to it," Bower said. "I haven't talked to the Pistons about Speedy." Hornets coach Byron Scott also refuted any talk of Claxton being traded. "It ain't going to happen," Scott told the newspaper. "Unless Joe wants to give us Chauncey (Billups). Speedy's not going anywhere." | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Tim Thomas
Suns | Nets? Spurs? | Will Spurs Sign Thomas? Feb 22 - The San Antonio Express-News reports there is a possibility the Spurs will look to sign Tim Thomas if Chicago decides to waive him.
