Should the Washington Redskins change their name?

This is something I was thinking about recently.

Basically, the word "Redskin" serves only one purpose -- to degrade Native Americans. Right? Like the Florida State Seminoles... okay, they can say it's an homage to a certain tribe, and the Atlanta Braves can say similarly. The Cleveland Indians is pretty bad, but at least the word "Indian" used to be a fairly acceptable term for Native Americans.

But the word REDSKIN is just a racial epithet, plain and simple. The more I think about it, the crazier it seems that there's an NFL football team called the Redskins!

What if the Saints were moved to LA, and called the Compton N*ggers!?

You have a point, I think I've actually heard some groups complain about this before. I would have no problem if they changed their name but I'm fairly sure it'll never happen. We hate Native Americans..remember? lol J/K..

But yeah, I wonder what they'd call themselves if they ever did change it. I wouldn't want it to be anything to do with D.C. because that's just too lame.. like the Capitals..that's stupid, or the Nationals, equally as dumb.

I'd rather see them have a name like Fire Sharks and bright colored uniforms like the Arena League.

I hate all this PC crap, people complaining about these college teams with Indian names having to change. Why? Because some people complained? Fine, then I am offended by the Duke Blue Devils name and want it changed.

The Redskins name is fine and I don't think it needs to be changed.

Dude, it's not that "Redskins" is politically incorrect -- it's fucking RACIST. There isn't one other way to use the word "Redskin" other than as a racial epithet.

What if New England's team was called the Crackers? Or the Giants changed their name to the Chinks? Or the Chargers changed to the Dirty Fucking Mexicans?

It's just a sports name, I haven't heard anybody complain about it. I've had a few friends who were Native Americans(and football fans) and they didn't care. People shouldn't be so sensitive about stuff like this.

It's not "just a sports name," it's a racial epithet. I'm sure there are some native dudes who find it funny, but I'm also sure there are thousands of bands and tribes who would be completely offended by it.

I don't really care either way. If they change the name I wouldn't be too upset. Would I like to see it stay as the Redskins? Yes. Just because it has been like that for years now and I don't feel that it should be changed.

I can definitely see the side of the argument though as to why it should be changed.

The term "Redskin" is in fact a racial slur...no doubt about. My thought about it is that most people don't even think about what it means. Most people just think about it as the name of their football team and that is it. I don't think any harm is meant by the term by today's fans.

But upon reflection, the term is offensive to Native Americans and for that reason I think that it should be changed.
