"The Goal"

For those who haven't seen Alexander Ovechkin's goal from the other night, you have to check this out.

http://www.youtube.com/?v=JjjMNjauwOo

Those of us who have seen it -- those of us who are Canadian -- have probably seen it 9 or 10 times by now, and it still blows my world away. If he isn't already by the end of the season, this guy will be the best player in the NHL before too long.

I seen that on the highlights the other night. I didn't realize it was him though.

Yes, I've seen this about 100 times already. You know a goal is impressive when you see it on SportsCenter that many times in the U.S. On to him, I don't know how it works in Canada but here in the U.S. this man will never be credited as the best anything, until he wins in the playoffs. Capitals?? I dunno.. It'd be nice if he got off that team.

There are only a few exceptions to this rule, and the only player in the NHL that could pull it off is Crosby because of his age.. much like LeBron in the NBA. Guy looks fantastic though from what I've seen.

This is Ovechkin's first season as well, though he's almost two years older than Crosby. What you have to remember is he doesn't even have linemates -- that is, in hockey, a forward generally plays most of his shifts with the same two guys, though lines are occasionally shuffled. Ovechkin hasn't had anything CLOSE to that. He's just going out there game after game, scoring at will with whoever they line up next to him -- and these are VERY mediocre players they're playing him with.

Oh, I understand he has no help at all.. It's just weird how people are looked at on shitty teams here in the U.S. For years Mitch Richmond was a top 5 player in the league but played on nothing but shit teams. Even Jordan realized how great the man was in his prime but nobody cared about him..

I only mention Crosby because he's "The Story" of the NHL whenever I see hockey coverage. Some people aren't even willing to call Alexander the better of the two players which is rediculous. I'm a Pens fan, but even I realize Crosby is being overatted. He's not exactly LeBron James. He's good, he's 18, and he should be one hell of a player... but Alexander is definitely better in my eyes. I don't like spelling Ovechin (sp?).. see..

Been a great rookie year with Ovechkin, Svatos, Phaneuf and Crosby. Right now Phaneuf and Crosby would be considered the favorites for the Calder simply because they have been the rookies of the month but it could still go to any of those four. Personally I see it coming down to Ovechkin and Phaneuf as long as they stay injury free.

Honestly, forget Rookie of the Month awards, I think the last month has seen Alex Ovechkin absolutely FLY by the rest of his Calder competition. Besides a handful of highlight reel goals, including "THE goal," he has 28 points in his last 15 games, including 10 multiple-point efforts in that span. He's 2nd in the league in goals, 5th in points. The only thing holding him back is how bad the rest of his team has been, and that is fucking ridiculous.

Wow I've heard of it a few times but thats the first time i saw it and thats amazing! The guy will for sure one day be one of the greatest, I mean hell he's even got the name "Alexander the great" all the best have something like that.
But you guys talkin about Crosby??? No... the guys gonna be the next Pavel Bure... he'll get rocked once and that'll be it. He's easily the most overrated guy in the NHL.
