Steve Phillips was named as the active GM today by the Sox.

For those who dont know Steve Phillips he was the man that single handedly destroyed the New York Mets by taking on contracts like Roberto Alomar, Mo Vaughn and Mike Piazza.

This is a bad bad day in Sox Nation.

Why the fuck they hired one of the worst GM's I have ever seen is beyond me man.

hahahaha....I just read that what ESPN did was they took Steve Philips, and set up a "simulated" press conference, where he pretended he was the GM of the Red Sox, and talked about what moves the Red Sox will make in the offseason.

Apparently, he was supposed to do it for several other teams too, but too many people got confused and thought that Philips was actually named Red Sox GM.

As a Mets fan, I thought Phillips did a great job the first couple of years he was there....remember they did make the playoffs in 99 and went to the World Series a year later. After that he did take on the terrible contracts of Vaughn and Alomar, but I'm sure we'd all be signing his praises if those guys had worked out. He wasn't building for the future, he was trying to win immediately. I think he was too caught up in trying to compete with the Yankees than trying to build the Mets into a perennial contender...but I think he's learned from his mistakes and would be a good GM for a team in the future.

Those simulated press conferences were very cheesy, though.
