What defines your overall sports knowledge?

This is spawned off another thread here in sports.


How do you know if you know more about sports than someone else? Because you can rattle off how many TD's Jerry Rice had in his career off the top of your head? Because you can stump your friends trivia wise? Because you know who the Denver Broncos are?

I firmly believe that sports is a very strange subject to debate as its all subjective and can be manipulated in many ways stats wise.

You could make Willie Mays look like the best player of all time or a complete bum based on the stats you pick out to make your point.


I just ask because I am one that feels EXTREMELY well informed when it comes to the NFL and MLB, while the other sports I know who everyone is and who they play for, but standings, leaders and that other stuff I just dont know. Basically because I dont care I suppose.

While I may know a ton about the NFL and MLB its hard to get your point across without just waiting for the devils advocate to respond. Everyone does it in sports talk, its not offensive, but just part of the game.

Yeah, when it comes to sports I play devil's advocate 95% of the time. It's just fun.

I feel like I know more about sports than most people, and that stems from both having watched and followed major sports pretty heavily my whole life, and being good at arguing. I think you need both, otherwise you're just a tool.

If you know every statistic there is to know about the NFL, but you can't access the knowledge on the spot in a debate, you're hopeless. You're just that guy who knows his stats. And the other way around, if you like to argue, but really know nothing at all about the NFL... well then you're a fucking asshole for wasting my time.

When it comes to the NFL, I'd say I know more about it than anyone else on the forum -- but I think any hardcore sports fan would (and should) say that.

Anyway, I am just a casual fan who is becoming a bigger fan. It doesn't mean I don't have a right to an opinion.

I'll stick to hockey and talk about that with people who don't have a sports complex.

I'll be honest.. there is alot of crap I don't kno about Hockey. My team is the Pens, I watch them, and I cheer for them, but I don't know everything there is to know about the sport.

The rest.. Well, I know a lot, quite a bit..

I also feel comfortable debating pretty much anything about hockey, and feel like I would win against anybody here except IRALB. That guy is my brother, and he has hockey statistics instead of red blood cells.
