That's right, this 19-year old Canadian male had never played a game of ice hockey in his life, before Wednesday. A bunch of my friends (all really good hockey players) formed a team for the UVic intramural hockey league, and since I was goalie on the grade 7 floor hockey team that won our school tournament, we thought it would be fun if I finally got to play ice hockey. I borrowed gear from my friend's dad, bought a helmet, stick and skates, and I'm good to go.
I'm a pretty weak skater (can't stop), so it was an adventure to say the least. I think I held my own though, and we won 3-2. I played left wing and had an even +/-, which I'm proud of.
I thought all Canadians had to play hockey like all Iraqi's have to join the army.
I played some hockey in my day.
Tell me, did you wear the straw hat?
Joke. I love you.
That seriously sounds like a lot of fun though. I want to get a table hockey game for my apartment.

I'm surprised this thread slipped through my filter, and my lord Freak you've never played? I guess that's a drawback from living on the Island.
Actually I'm back playing after a year or so off. I've just played pickup religiously at the rinks behind my house. I'm currently playing in a "Fellowship" league, despite not being a member of any church whatsoever. Although the comeback is going to be slightly delayed due to this weekend concussion/neck injury.
Hal keep updates, I will as well.

I have never played ice hockey either. Never really learned how to skate. I think I went skating once as a kid, fell on my ass a lot and decided I didn't like it. Maybe I should give it another chance now that I would have more patience and have always wanted to play ice hockey
So my only hockey experience has been floor hockey and street hockey. In grade 9 my junior high started having actitivty days where you could pick a sport to play for the day. I always went with floor hockey and me and my friends always managed to get the same team together that never lost and got to run around the gym with a pathetic tropy made out of cardboard all three of the activity days. With my height I was basically Bertuzzi on running shoes since everybody was so short and small compared to me I could basically just run them over on my way to the net :laugh11: Then I have always had really good running acceleration so that combined with my wrist shot lead to goal after goal. Then my one friend had played ice hockey since he was young as a goalie and he didn't let in many goals. My other two friends mostly stayed back to defend but would come up for rebounds and stuff. Also had to do more offense on my frequent penalties *Cough* Wish they did those since grade 7 though since the next year it was off to high school and never seeing floor hockey again :lick: Was the most fun I think I ever had in school.
Street hockey hasn't been as happy for me though. Like I said my wrist shot is great but in floor hockey we were not allowed slap shots so when I could do that in street hockey it lead to some trouble. My slap shot is hard but about 0% accurate :laugh11: So when I wind up I just let it go and pray I don't break anything. Which I did do a couple of times. Thankfully I never hit a window though. Only a fence, siding of a house and my friends nose. Oh and my one friend might not be having kids but we are still waiting to determine that one. Then I have had my fair share of injuries too. But really it is worth it for a couple of hours of fun playing street hockey with your friends. Then when I was a kid it was really great. We used to live in this townhouse complex that had a perfect place to play hockey. Everybody who lived there from younger kids like me to older teens would get together and play. How they tolerated us I will never know but all were great around kids. Nothing but good memories of those days. Still miss that place even though it has been about 10 years since we moved and I know it probably wouldn't be the same now.
Oh and then there was wall hockey. We used to have concrete walls in our basement so when I was bored and there wasn't one of the street hockey games going on I would pull out my trapper and toss a tennis ball against it. Of course one day I had to have an accident with something like that to. Ball bounced off the wall faster than I expected and got me right in the eye :lick: It sounds stupid but it as a kid it managed to keep me entertained for hours.

I essentially have grown up in life playing hockey with whatever instruments I could fine, when my girlfriend falls asleep I find myself grabbing a couple paperclips and piece of paper and playing some pickup on her back.
Tomorrow I'll tell you boys about the epic Winter Elm Park Street Hockey League of the 1990's.

I lived in Ontario from the ages of 6 to 11, and always really wanted to play hockey, but my family could never afford it. My dad told me that was one of the hardest things he ever had to deal with, but I totally understood and understand.
There is actually a booming youth hockey association in BC, especially on Vancouver Island. Like I said, all my teammates have been playing their whole lives.

I've never learned to skate, I tried it once on a field trip back in 4th grade but kept falling down. I never have a chance to go skating anyways so it doesn't bother me that much.

It's easy to do, there's no excuse behind not knowing how.
Ice skating is an awesome first date. You get to hold hands, talk, and move about the place so you don't have to be too personal. It's way better then a movie. Plus, it's romantic.
Then you tell her that you got a hotel room.
Works for me.
