I'm sure this has been done before but with Lance winning his seventh victory at the Tour De France it seems apt.

Who is the greatest athlete of our time? Is Lance better than Tiger Woods? Is Tiger Woods better than Michael Jordan? Is Michael Jordan better than David Beckham?

Who do you think has accomplished the most? Who is the greatest athlete of our time?

I would have to say Michael Jordan. I just always thought it was pretty cool that he was cut from his freshmen high school team and then practised really hard and ended up starting the last three years he was in high school. I hope that is correct information it seems I heard that somewhere.

greatest athlete?..i would say none of then the Great One himself Wayne Gretzky..
he had accomplished all in his career...broke the record held by his idol Gordie Howe
played with him too when he was young...most talented player in NHL..u can name all kind of NHL players now a days..but none can top Gretzky..I give props to Michael Jordan, Tiger Wood, Lance and Schumacher..i think they are the best players in their own game..their level of skills have brought the face n trend of that sports world wide..i mean..if u asked anyone on the street..name one player from NHL, NBA..PGA etc...they probably will name them..(not sure about F1) but yeh..they are the best..but for me to picked one..i will say Gretzky

David Beckham may be a big icon and all but I wouldnt compare him to people like that theres much better footballers you could use

Damn..that's a tough question really..


I mean, when I think of great athletes I start thinking about a bunch of different sports and it's hard to say what sports are tougher to be great at..They are all insanely tough.

I'd say the greatest athlete in the world would be someone wwho has been at the top of his game and also been a force in other sports to boot..

As we know, Michael Jordan was a pretty bad baseball player..

So with that said, I would pick Jim Brown. Why you ask? because he is the greatest NFL running back of all time, and he was known as one of the greatest Lacrosse players to ever live as well..

Gretzky, Jordan, Woods, Lance Armstrong... all of these guys come to mind as individuals who really dominated their sport. It would be hard to nominate any football or baseball player really, outside of perhaps Babe Ruth.

You can't punctuate this thread without Muhammad Ali, however.

Its so hard comparing the diffrent sports, You could have Sir Steve Redgrave who is the only person to have won Olympic Gold in 5 diffrent olympics, Carl Lewis who has the record for the most medals in Track & Field or Mark Spitz who won 7 gold medals in the same games

I suppose the best athlete I ever saw was Daley Thompson who was a two time Olympic decathlon champion. He also won the World Championships, multiple wins in European & Commonwealth games and broke the World Record for the event four times.

I would have to say Lance Armstrong. Here's why:

For 7 years in a row, he's won one of the most grueling tests of endurance in sports today. It's hard enough to win it once, but 7 times in a row? Thats ridiculous. Plus, it's not like he's competing against a small field. He beats out hundreds of other riders each year.

And on top of that, is all the good he's done raising money for cancer research. I think they've sold something like 50 million livestrong bracelets, and Lance doesnt get a single penny from any of them.

Here's another thing that makes me respect him even more. After winning his first Tour de France, a reporter asked him "Does this prove that you can do anything if you put your mind to it?" and he replied, "No, not at all. There were other cancer patients at the Mayo Clinic with me who wanted to survive just as badly as I did, and didnt make it. I didnt try any harder than them, I was just very fortunate"

He's obviously a guy who has his head on right.

Plus, his cameo in Dodgeball was hysterical
