Technically as long as there is a goal to obtain and a winner and a loser, basically it is a sport.
So with that being said.
Is poker a sport?
Is fishing a sport?
Is chess a sport?
Think about it?

Well poker and chess I would consider games of mental ability but still sports non the less. It requires in depth study of your opponent and what the odds are when playing.
Fishing? I don't consider that a sport....it just requires knowing where the fish are, what bait to use, and how to reel them in.

I think this question will always have different answers depending on who you ask. I agree with Simon's definition of what a sport is.
Why do they call it sport fishing? Anyone can fish but to be really good you need a certian skill level and some people are better at it than others and can be turned into a who gets more or who is better at doing it.

I'm sure that others will disagree, but I tend to think of sport as something that must involve a high degree of physicality and competition. Thus I put things like fishing and darts and poker down as past times or games instead of sport.
I suppose one that leaves me in a quandry is motor sport, however these guys do have to be in good shape and theres a lot of physicality and competition in what they do, so I'd say that's a sport too.

But by your definition Bulldog, Golf wouldn't be considered a sport and here in the U.S. , not only is Golf considered a sport, but it's huge in respect to it's popularity.
I never really thought the X-Games stuff was sport, but then someone got pissed off at me for it, so I agreed that they are indeed sports..lol
I guess it depends on who you are...I think the real sports involve a team aspect. That's me thinking..

No I would consider Golf a sport. I mean apart from one or two particular guys, they're all in pretty good physical condition. I'd let that in.

I've posted my thoughts on this many times in the past. Basically, I agree with Bulldog that a high level of physical exertion must come in to play.
All the following, I do not consider to be sports:
Poker
Darts
Auto racing
Horse racing (for the jockeys. A jockey is not an athlete. The horse is the athlete)
Fishing
Billiards
Golf is borderline, but I'll go towards yes. Not only is it extremely difficult and challenging, but the physicality involved with hitting the ball as far as you can makes it a sport
Now, if it was just putting, it wouldnt be a sport.

Take a look of the events that are the olympics that are sports. Not all of them require physicality, but it would be hard to argue something that is in the Olympics is not a sport.

Well, shooting is in the Olympics and I don't consider it a sport.
That is one of the examples I was referring to but it is kind of hard to sday it isn't a sport when it is in the Olympics,no? It has to be a sport to be an Olympic event.
