NBA Draft

Does anyone here follow the NBA or college close? From what I am hearing this kid the Celtics drafted could be the next Kevin Garnett if we are lucky. People are saying its an absolute steal that we got Gerald Green.

Can someone give me more info?

Personally, I thought Green was gonna go 5th overall, and I was shocked to see him drop so far. I dont know much about him, I've just heard lots of people talking about him being really good and definitely being a lottery pick. I think the Celts may have gotten a steal...

Yes, I heard that it's a steal for the C's also because the kid was ranked right up there with Martell Webster and he went #6 I believe to Portland.

I didn't like the Bogut pick by the Bucks, because while I think he could be a real good player, I think Marvin Williams is going to be a star..

It'll be interesting to see which Point Guard becomes the best out of Paul, Williams, and Felton. I like them all.

The Celtics had a very good draft, as they picked up Ryan Gomes in the 2nd round. I can't believe Toronto took Villanueva 7th overall; that was a joke. He's got talent, but he has like 1 good game then 4-5 games where you hardly notice he's on the court. Plus, he plays the same position as Chris Bosh, who's the team's best player. Makes no sense; they basically wasted what could've been a good pick.

I like Memphis getting Hakim Warrick at 19. He's athletic and should fit in well with their up-tempo style.

I was planning on making an NBA Draft thread, but I decided to just break this off from the random sports thoughts one

Besides being ridiculously inconsistent, Villanueva cant play defense to save his life. He looks totally lost out there when playing D

Also, my Knicks had one of their better drafts in recent memory. I love Channing Frye, and Nate Robinson from Washington might be a really good player. A lot of scouts were high on him.

If they had only taken Salim Stoudamire with the 30th pick instead of David Lee, it wouldve been a perfect draft for them

Yeah, Salim was probably the best shooter in the draft so that could have been a solid bench player for anybody. Who the hell knows if Lee will ever become anything...

I like Channing Frye, he's a good scorer and a real good shot blocker, but I'd just be a little worried about his agresiveness. He disapeared sometimes in college, he needs to put on a little weight and stop being a *****, and he could be real good.

I agree, The C's and the Knicks had good drafts. I love what the Bobcats did adding May and Felton to Okafor from last year. I knew Okafor would be good seeing him a lot at UCONN, I think May will be a solid player, and Felton has the skills to be a very good playmaker for that young team.

The Toronto papers are all over this kid. I feel kind of bad for him, everyone was talking about how terrible he is. It is a stupid pick though, because he plays the same position as Bosh. The Raptors always have the stupidest draft picks.

I heard there are a few teams are really interested in him, so maybe we can trade him for a decent vet or something. Overall, it was a terrible pick. Poor guy. :thumbsd:

Bill Simmons from ESPN.com has put up his annual draft diary...some fo the highlights:

7:39 – We just learned that Bogut's favorite food is "soup." That choice narrowly edged "bread."

7:57 – The following exchange about the Paul pick just occurred:

– Stephen A. Smith: "If you're the New Orleans Hornets, you could pick Winnie the Pooh and you would have improved."

Portland GM John Nash (looking grim and nervous) just explained the pick by saying, "First of all, we think we took an outstanding young man, he's a terrific character, somebody that the community of Portland can be proud of, in addition to a very good player." Translation: Don't worry, this guy may stink down the road, but at least he won't end up in jail.

8:14 – Remember my running joke about Charlie Villanueva looking like the lead singer of Midnight Oil? Well, Charlie has a new claim to fame – he just became one of the top-five worst picks in the history of the NBA draft. Toronto took him seventh. Seventh! Seventh! Rob Bab**** just drafted Rafael Araujo and Charlie Villanueva with back-to-back top-10 picks when he already had Chris Bosh! And he just left Green and Danny Granger on the board! Throw in the Carter trade and are we absolutely sure that Bab**** isn't Scott Layden using a fake Canadian passport? (sorry Pink...)

8:55 – Hoping to replace Latrell Sprewell's scoring, explosion and overall insanity, Minnesota takes Rashad McCants at No. 14. This leads to the funniest moment of the draft – McCants taking so long to hug his family and posse that Stern zoned out on the podium, followed by McCants having to tap him on the shoulder for the obligatory handshake. Fantastic. That could have earned this telecast "Save Until I Delete" TiVo status for at least three weeks.

2. E-mail of the night from Florida reader Frank Kosher: "Was I the only one expecting to hear, 'With the 27th pick, in the 2005 NBA draft, the Portland Trail Blazers select … Carlton Dotson, from Baylor University."

4. Frenchman Ian Mahinmi (who went to San Antonio at No. 28) received the unprecedented thumbnail scouting report blurb: "Must Improve: Overall Skills." Probably not a good idea to invest in his rookie cards any time soon

My favorite thing ever from Simmons's draft diaries is when one player was invited to attend the draft and he declined. Which prompted him to say:

What? Did he have something better to do on the biggest night of his life so far? Must improve: Giving a crap

And when he was talking about a 7-footer who got drafted that has a thyroid disorder and one of his boys said, "Must improve: Genetic deficiencies"
