What do you guys think about this?

OK, so the big news in New York sports yesterday was the unveiling of the plans for the new Yankee Stadium. Since my opinion may be biased, I wanted to see what outside observers think.

First off, it will be built basically right across the street from Yankee stadium's current location. It will have the same dimensions as the current Yankee Stadium (deep in left center, very short down the lines), and the outside of the Stadium will look exactly as the original Yankee Stadium did when it was built in 1923.

Also, there will be about 6000 fewer seats, but 50 to 60 more luxury boxes.

So, I ask you, with a team as historic as the Yankees and a stadium as historic as Yankee Stadium, do you think the Yankees should move to a new ballpark?

And for Simon, I ask you this: How would you feel if the Red Sox moved out of Fenway?

I am completely behind doing whatever it takes to renovate Yankee Stadium so its forever standing. Same with Fenway.

Wrigley on the other hand, they can turn that into a parking lot.

I think it's ok...If my understanding is right, the foundation of Yankee stadium is like over 80 years old. The thing is a bit outdated, so I'm all for a new ballpark. These things happen in sports, a lot of times you don't want to let go of a ballpark, like how the Yanks don't want to let go of Bernie Williams, but sometimes you just have to say, "Thanks for the memories" and move on. From both.

First off. Didnt cement fall off the balcony in huge chunks like 5 years back? Imagine if that happened in a game.

Not being from New York when I think of the overall aura and presence of the Yankees, literally one of the last things I think of is the actual staduim.

Granted Yankee stadium is old and nostalgic, but when I went there in 2003, there was not one thing that impressed me about it. I thought it was actually pretty much a shithole. It seemed so generic to me.

Blow the bitch up and keep the Yankee Graveyard, that's it.

As far as location. Could you get a fucking worse location than Yankee stadium. I personally wasnt scared when I went there, but I would have a different feeling if I had a pregnant wife and/or a little child with me. It just doesnt feel safe around there.

There also doesnt need to be as many seats as there are now in Yankee staduim.

On a side note, I often times think its downright hilarious that Yankee fans consider themselves the greatest, most diehard fans in the world. Yet with the x million people that live in the city of New York they can't manage to bang the place out game in game out.

What I am saying is. New York CITY has 8 million people (I looked it up), Boston has 589 thousand people.

Here are the numbers......

New York averaged 47,788 people for 83.1% capacity

Boston averaged 35,028 people for 100.7% capacity. (Yup, only stadium in baseball that goes above capacity)

Point being, the stadium doesnt need to be as big when they could lop off 20% and increase ticket demand at the same time.

Also D. Blow up Fenway. Design a park for more than right handed power hitters, and for the love of god make the seats face home plate (right field seats face the right fielder)

Its about the team, not where they play. Nostaligia is for assholes. lol

Well, the Yankees have far and away the highest average attendance in baseball. As for why it's not always filled to capacity, here are a few reasons why

1. There is another team in the same city
2. Much of the city is comprised of people who relocated from other places. Which is why you always see so many Red Sox fans at Yankees games
3. With 81 games a year to choose from, why go see a July game against Tampa Bay when you can go to a game against Boston or the Mets? Its those bullshit games against teams like Detroit and Tampa that bring the average attendance down
4. Some of the Yankee badwagon fans have jumped off, unlike the Red Sox bandwagon fans. You gotta admit there are are a TON of Red Sox bandwagon fans
5. Highest ticket prices in baseball
6. Extremely inconvenient to get to the stadium.
7. Dangerous neighborhood surrounding the stadium
8. Ridiculously high concession stand prices

You cant expect a team to put 55,000 people in the stands EVERY game. I mean, there were like 45,000 people in the stands last night for a mid-week game against the Pirates. To me, thats damn impressive

I don't care either way, but the Red Sox have sold out I think like 180 straight home games, including games against Tigers, D-Rays, etc.

Now, if they had a 55,000 seat stadium would that happen? I don't know.

Heh, ever been to Comiskey? When they were building the new stadium in '90, there were bullet holes in the upper deck seats courtesy of the people living in the project buildings (which have since been removed) across the street.

How many games was it that the Indians sold out straight? It was from like 1994 - 2002.
