Ha Ha I said this to my flatmate as a joke but maybe it could happen...

Taken from BBC.co.uk
Quote:

Welsh champions TNS have offered Liverpool an unlikely opportunity to defend their Champions League title.

TNS chairman Mike Harris says the Reds can take his side's place in the first qualifying round draw if they win a play-off match between the two sides.

"We've an open mind to a pre-qualifier for our position in the Champions League," Harris told BBC Wales Sport.

Liverpool failed to qualify for next season's Champions League after finishing fifth in the Premiership.

The Football Association has confirmed that the top four teams will be entered into next season's competition, and Uefa says it has no plans to give Liverpool special dispensation to defend their title.

But the FA says it will lobby strongly for Liverpool to be entered into the qualifying rounds.

Said FA executive director David Davies: "If they are admitted at an early stage they could play one if not two of the smallest sides in Europe and for those clubs it would be a fantastic prospect in terms of both football and finances to face the European champions."

Harris said he has not yet contacted Uefa with his proposition, but European football's governing body is unlikely to sanction such a game.
I say we (Wales) give England a Champions League spot and you let us beat you in the World Cup qualifing game in September!! I say that's fair!

No they shouldn't get it, you can't go changing the rules now. You have to change them for next year if you're so bothered. Same goes with the FA, they can't kick Everton out, and neither is it fair to kick some shit foreign team out of a qualifying game. They're too shit, they stay out.

Great game though!

I do agree they shouldn't change the rules, but I also believe Liverpool should have he right to defend their trophy. Catch 22 at the moment... but as it stands now I can't see Liverpool getting that extra place.

If they don't do you reckon Stevie G will stick around? I have a feeling he'll be off if they don't get in. What a way to end your career at a club by winning the biggest prize of them all.

Liverpool - European Champions

Therefor, shouldn't they be allowed in?

Because they didn't qualify. They finished 5th.

If Everton are kicked out of the Champions League by the FA it would make a mockery of the so called rules. Everton qualified for the Champions League, Liverpool didn't. SO what they won the title, they didn't derserve it anyway, maybe next year they might concentrate on beating Fulham than Ac Milan.

And thats the story we`ll go with if you do beat us...

Seriously tho Im a Liverpool fan and as much as I want to see my side defend their title it cannot be at the expense of Everton. Everton were the English Champions in the year of the Hysel stadium disaster and as of such missed out on playing in the European Championship when English teams were banned from the competetion because of the behavior of, mainly, our Liverpool fans. In the intrest of good sporting practice there is no conceivable way we can replace them when this is the first chance they have had to enter the competetion since. However I dont think anyone would miss a smaller club (big-up TNS for their suggestion). Im sure Young Boys or Macabi Haifa would`nt be missed and would probably benifit from a two-legged play-off with a side as big as Liverpool as a pre-qualifying game. Either way I hope UEFA come to their senses instead of their usual stance of giving England nothing.

I had a sig, once.

Fair enough, 'Pool didn't finish in a position to qualify.

However, my original point is that as European champions, surely they qualify by default as the European champions?

I hate the fact it's called European "Champions" league, with 3/4 of the teams in in not current champions. The whole competition is pretty flawed anyway and this whole thing with Liverpool winning it (as great a match as it was) shows what a flawed tournament it is.

Incidentally, as for UEFA jabbering on about how they had no idea that a team could win it when they haven't qualified in their own league, well that would be true if it hadn't already happened in about 2000 to Real Madrid in Spain. They won it and the Spanish league then demoted their 4th placed team (Zaragoza) to the UEFA Cup. Within two years Zaragoza were relegated from La Liga!!!!

Yeah and it caused a huge shit stink amongst the reat of the La Liga too who felt that it was favouritism.

I totally agree with the Champions League being flawed too. I really detested the methods Liverpool used to get to the final. At least Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea tried to win matches, Liverpool simply sat and defended and bored me to death. I think the fact that the goal that got them to the final didn't even come close to crossing the line makes a sham of the CL.

I'd say it makes more of a sham of the rule that means we can't have cameras on the goal-line, which would allow for clearer decisions.
