Oh I agree, it probably wasn't a dealbreaker for most of those guys. I wonder how much it affected lesser players though, guys who are maybe further down the list and unnoticed. Probably not a ton even there, but its something to think about anyway.

I looked around and couldn't find when that rule was implemented, though to be honest I didn't look that hard.

Remember in the playoffs a few years back, Robin Ventura hit a walk off slam for the Mets but was only credited with a single and one RBI since he never advanced past first base? Not really relevant, just a random thought.

Oh, without a doubt. He is one of my favorite players ever, just for his clutch factor alone. Even Bill Melton says Ventura's the best 3B the Sox ever had. Anyway yeah, he's hit a couple walkoff slams in his career other than the one mentioned. The guy was money.

Yes, I think Robin had like 16 or 17 career grand slams, I'm not sure on the exact number.

As far as the R.B.I. rule goes, it probably did cost those guys some ribbies but did you guys know that for a while until the 1930's or 40's that there was no such thing as a ground rule double? If the ball bounced off the grass and over the fence it counted as a homer run back then.

Do you know the rules of baseball? Like, how runs are scored and stuff?

RBI = run batted in. That means that if you're batting, and if somebody scores during your at-bat, you get credited for an RBI (there are a few exceptions, but this is generally it)

That's funny.

I can hear the broadcast from the fabled Yankees/Cubs series way back when...

"Ruth at the plate...he's pointing...yes folks, I do believe he is pointing to the gap in left/center! He's calling his shot!"

Walks also counted as a hit towards your batting average way back in the day
