When these things happen the only thing I'll say is that the players should stay in the dugout. I know they want to feel like they are protecting the player, but then the fans get even more riled up because they feel like the players are disrespecting them....and it could turn into something bigger like the whole Pistons-Pacers shit.

Thanks to a quick reaction by security personnel and last-second restraint by New York Yankees right fielder Gary Sheffield, a potentially ugly fight in the stands was averted last night at Fenway Park

Now, the New York Post: April 15, 2005 - Yankee outfielder Gary Sheffield last night lashed out at a Red Sox fan who took a cheap shot at him during another explosive battle between the Bombers and Boston at Fenway Park.

Also, let me say that security did a very good job handling the situation, from what I've read

Sheffield is in the wrong there...I thought fans were allowed to reach out and even if they aren't Sheffield should relax.

Well, I didnt see what happened, but if the fan took a swing at him, then it's the fan's fault. If it was just incidental contact, then it's sheffield's fault. I think it was probably just incidental and Sheffield overreacted.

Yeah D, you should really see it first before listening to all these different reports. My take on it is that the fan wanted that ball, was extrememly intoxicated and didnt even come close to it. If he was trying to "punch" Sheffy, then he should have done the following.

1. Close your fist, it was in a cupping position.

2. Look at your attacker (he was looking at the ball)

3. Dont completely back off when approached.


I am not saying what Sheffy did was wrong, because in his head at that split moment he probably thought the guy was doing something wrong.

Yeah, thats what I figured happened. It was probably that the fan was going for the ball, accidentally hit Sheffield in the mouth, Sheff thought it was intentional, overreacted, and then cooler heads prevailed. Sound about right?

I just found it very amusing that the New York Post (which isnt exactly the highest-class paper) right away labeled it a "cheap shot"

Both were in the wrong since the fan shouldn't go for the ball when it is in play (like it was) and Sheffield didn't need to push the fan even though he probably deserved it. I am not a I don't like either team so that doesn't factor into anything that I said. I actually hate the Yankees more.
