Sign-and-trades are a way around that. You can trade for a guy even if it puts you over the cap, so a guy like Ray Allen could sign a max deal with Seattle, and then get traded to the Lakers.

Yes but wouldn't the Sonics want something in return to give up their best player? What would the Lakers give them..Lamar Odom? I wouldn't take that.

That was just an example about how a player can get a max contract without staying with his current team.

Let's say, hypothetically, that Ray Allen has absolutely no interest in returning to the Sonics, prefers to go play for the Spurs, and the Lakers offered Lamar Odom and two first-round draft picks. It benefits the Sonics because they at least get something in return for their best player. It benefits Ray Allen because he gets paid more than he would have if he just signed with the Spurs or Lakers outright. And it benefits the Lakers because they get the player they really wanted despite him preferring to go to another team.

I'm not saying this is anywhere near the realm of a possibility. I just know Ray Allen is a free agent at the end of this year, and the Lakers are the subject of the topic, so I just used them as an example

Oh, also, if the Sonics options are:

a) Just lose Ray Allen outright to another team via free agency or
b) Sign him and immediately trade him for Lamar Odom

I would take b every time.

Besides, what's wrong with Lamar Odom? He's from Queens, baby!!! Christ the King H.S. in the house!

Yeah..I know what you're sayin..if a guy is unhappy like Shaq was with the Lakers and The Heat had enough to them to get the big man. As far as Allen goes, last I heard him and The Sonics seemed to be working out something where he could return...probably because of the success the team has had, but who knows? things could change there. But I know what you are sayin' about a guy that may be unhappy with his current team.

Amen. Kobe's been a punk since he forced the Hornets to trade him and I hope the Lakers keep it up.

The Knicks could easily be contenders if they knew what they were doing... but spending all that money on Allan Houston?!

Get out of here with that crap...I seen him play at Rhode Island. He HAD a lot of potential. That's all over now...he's just another solid NBA player, nothing more. And nobody knows more about Ray Allen than me...Maybe it's the Uconn bias that I have, but he is one of the most underated players in the league.

Sign and trades are away around it, but dont you still need to have an equal money amount to trade for?

I don't think it has to be equal Sabac, but it has to be within' a certain percentage. I don't remember the exact numbers.

I hope the lakers fight back from this. I still cant beleive they couldnt get shaq and kobe on the same page after they won titles together. Kobe needs somebody to take the pressure off him not even Jordan could beat teams by himself he only won titles when paired up with Pippen.

CAN YOU MAKE THAT HIP HOP KONEXION?
