I could care less about how much money each team spends, however, I have to disagree with Simon on one thing.

I think you're right about money not guaranteeing anything to a certain extent, but I think if you have a $200 Million dollar payroll it's a different story. I think anybody could make a playoff team out of $200 Million no matter how dumb the GM was.

You're right about the Jays though. They have had very low attendence for a team who won Two World Series in the 90's. I can't explain how that happend.

You can't honestly compare the 01 DBacks, 02 Angels, and 03 Marlins, to a Jays team as of now. The Jays are stuck behind three of the highest paid teams in MLB, in their own division, let alone the AL.

Yes $100 Mill would put them in a position to be a solid contender, as it has with New York and Boston, Baltimore just can't get the formula right because they're not looking for a pitcher, Sidney Ponson? Please.

Yes, it is an old argument, but they're is such substantial evidence that it's true. New York and Boston are proof of this.

Maybe two world series' followed by a players strike and ten years of zero post-season play?

Umm..no. The attendence drop happend before the last few years. Maybe it did have something to do with the strike. That's what they blamed the Expos on. They said the strike killed baseball in Montreal. Maybe the strike killed baseball in all of Canada.

Simon, what are you talking about? The Jays didn't win the World Series in an era of 200-million dollar payrolls and shortstops with 100-million dollar contracts. I love the fact that, unlike a lot of high-spending teams, the Jays have built from within over the years with guys like Halladay, Wells, Delgado, etc., and I'd also like to believe that Ricciardi's plan is going to help them topple the Yankees and Sox.

Unfortunately, it's never going to happen.

Talk all you want about the Marlins and D-Backs (NOT a low-budget team, mind you), but teams with star-studded rosters like NYY are simply not going to lose 70 games a year, and therefore are not going to miss the playoffs.

I'm sure I'd like baseball more if I was cheering for a team that could throw ridiculous amounts of money at a single player... but I'm not. And therefore I think baseball is just fucked up at the moment.

While it is true that the Yankees and Red Sox spend far more money than anyone else, there have been teams in recent years that have spent nearly as much and been terrible. The Mets and Dodgers, specifically.

The Orioles, Jays, and D-Rays are suffering not only because the Yankees and Sox have so much money to spend, but because they also spend it wisely

And I agree with Freak that until the late 90's, the payroll disparity was not nearly as large. And also take notice that the Yankees, like Simon said, have not actually won the World Series since going on their ridiculous spending spree. However, they make the playoffs every year, which for most teams *cough* Atlanta *cough* would be good enough.

The Yankees have set such a high standard for themselves, that anything less than the World Series is a disappointment. and the spending spree only adds to the pressure

Well I suppose I jumped on the Boston band wagon last season. Also another reason is the only one of my friends follows baseball and he's a Yankees fan, so we can't support the same side.
