Uefa has branded Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho "the enemy of football" as they asked referee Anders Frisk to reconsider his decision to retire.
Mourinho criticised his display against Barcelona in the Champions League.
Frisk quit after receiving death threats, and Uefa referees' committee chairman Volker Roth accused Mourinho.
He said: "We can't accept that one of our best referees has been forced to quit because of this. People like Mourinho are the enemy of football."
Frisk walked away from football on Saturday after officiating for 16 years but Uefa communications director William Gaillard says the body wants him to change his mind.
"Our first reaction was of solidarity and compassion," said Gaillard.
"Uefa have been in contact with Anders to try to convince him to come back to refereeing because we need people of his calibre and quality." Mourinho accused Frisk of talking to Barcelona manager Frank Rijkaard at half-time during Chelsea's Champions League last-16 first-leg.
Has this happend in any other sport... where a player or manager has been involved with an official quiting?
So is Jose responsible for Frisk quitting, or is Frisk just over reacting?
I'm a big fan of Mourinho but I think he's gone too far on his treatment of Frisk, he wasn't totally to blaime, but I think he's been a major factor in Frisk's decision. I think Frisk is one of the best ref's in Europe if not the world, and theres not many good ref's out there so it's sad to see him go. I suppose he'll have more time to spend on his sun bed now!!!
Ah, this whole situation is being blown out of proportion.
Mourinho may have been wrong in his statements - jealousy for losing, misunderstanding something he saw, who knows. But ultimately, Mourinho can not be held accountable for those who put a death threat on Frisk - only those who did that can be. Plus, if Mourinho thinks he saw Frisk delegating with Riijkard, doesn't he have a right to say so?
I don't blame Frisk for quitting, especially with threats on his family. But I don't blame old Jose either. I feel he's being picked on because he is successful, and success breeds contempt.

Mourinho may not have put a death threat on Frisk, but he is accountable...he's gotta understand, that people will take his word and will take his side (his fans). This celebs gotta be real carefull with what they say, especially in soccer (their fans are nuts).
