NFL Free Agent Rumors for week of 3/14

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Plaxico Burress
Steelers
Vikings
Dolphins?
Eagles?
Mar. 14 - Free-agent wide receiver Plaxico Burress has hired agent Drew Rosenhaus with hopes of landing a big-money contract, possibly with the Dolphins. Rosenhaus said on a weekly Miami talk show that his client is interested in playing for the Dolphins. According to The Miami Herald, Rosenhaus plans to discuss Burress with Miami coach Nick Saban at the owners' meetings this week in Hawaii.

Burress has visited the Giants and Vikings, and the Minneapolis Star-Tribune indicated Burress was considering a visit to Philadelphia and might now be looking for the best one-year offer available with plans to enter the free-agent market again next year. The Vikings might consider signing him to a one-year contract. Thursday, the Giants withdrew their offer, which has been reported as six years and $24 million, with an $8 million signing bonus. The 27-year-old wide receiver is believed to be seeking a contract similar to the six-year, $30 million contract and the $12 million signing bonus Muhsin Muhammad got from the Bears.

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Orlando Pace
Rams
TexansMar. 14 - With time running out to get a long-term deal with the Rams, Orlando Pace and his new agent, Kennard McGuire, are trying to facilitate a trade to the Texans, ESPN.com's John Clayton reports. Pace and McGuire flew to Houston on Monday.

The Rams have until March 16 to finalize a new contract with Pace, a franchise player, before a four-month negotiating blackout period begins. That Pace is visiting Houston likely means he doubts any long-term financial resolution can be reached with the Rams. A multiyear deal for Pace, who currently counts $8.425 million against St. Louis' salary cap, could trim $3 million or more from that cap figure.

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Stockar McDougle
SteelersMar. 14 - Former Lions offensive tackle Stockar McDougle is scheduled to visit the Steelers on Tuesday, The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. McDougle, a first-round pick of the Lions in 2000, started all 16 games for Detroit the last two seasons. The Steelers are also pursuing tight end Marcellus Rivers (formerly of the Giants) and offensive tackle Adrian Klemm (Patriots).

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Gus Frerotte
Vikings
Broncos
Dolphins
Vikings
Mar. 14 - Gus Frerotte has canceled a trip to Denver and has agreed to sign with Miami as A.J. Feeley's backup. Terms of that deal will be finished up over the next 24 hours. The 33-year-old Frerotte, who spent the past two seasons with the Vikings, will be joining his sixth team.

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Brad Johnson
Buccaneers
Vikings
Bears
Dolphins
Mar. 14 - Free-agent quarterback Brad Johnson is scheduled to meet with the Vikings today, reports The Minneapolis Star Tribune. The Vikings still hope to re-sign Gus Frerotte as Daunte Culpepper's backup, but would consider Johnson if Frerotte signs elsewhere, which appears likely. Johnson, who began his career in Minnesota in 1992, has already visited Miami, Detroit and Chicago. The Lions, who signed Jeff Garcia over the weekend, are no longer a possibility for Johnson. Only A.J. Feeley and Sage Rosenfels stand in the way of a starting job in Miami, but the Dolphins are believed to be leaning toward Frerotte.

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Donovin Darius
Jaguars
Vikings?
Dolphins?
Mar. 14 - With a trade out of Jacksonville unlikely, it appears disgruntled safety Donovin Darius will have to play another season with the Jaguars, according The Florida Times-Union.

After receiving permission to seek a trade, Darius publicly expressed a desire to play for the Vikings or Dolphins. The Vikings expressed the most interest in Darius, but according to the paper, the Jags have turned down two recent trade proposals from Minnesota. The Jaguars have not spoken to the Dolphins about a trade.

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Darren Howard
Saints
Seahawks
Cowboys
Mar. 14 - The Seahawks and Cowboys are among the teams that have talked to the Saints about a trade involving defensive end Darren Howard. The Saints are asking for at least a second-round pick in return for their franchise player, according to The Dallas Morning News.

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Edgerrin James
Colts
Cardinals?
Dolphins?
Buccaneers?
49ers?
Mar. 11 - The Indianapolis Star lists four teams as possible suitors for James, whom the Colts are willing to trade after coming to the realization they can't sign him to the kind of long-term contract he is seeking. Agent Drew Rosenhaus told the paper the Colts won't necessarily demand a high price for James, potentially making acquiring the frachised running back easier on some teams.

According to the paper, the Cardinals meet all the criteria to be a legitimate suitor, but the team might choose to draft a running back with the No. 8 overall pick next month. Miami makes sense, as well, but coach Nick Saban has indicated the team isn't willing to give up much. Would a package of Patrick Surtain and a draft pick get it done? Tampa Bay also needs a running back but still is experiencing salary-cap difficulty and might not be able to fit James in. The Star suggests a trade of Ronde Barber and a draft pick for James. The 49ers have both cap space and multiple draft picks to deal, plus the paper suggests they could include RB Kevan Barlow in a trade.

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Shaun Alexander
Seahawks
Buccaneers?
Dolphins?
Cardinals?
Mar. 11 - The Seahawks have informed Alexander's agent they're willing to deal the franchised running back and might be willing to accept less than a first-round draft pick in return. However, with so many quality running backs available, either in trade or in April's draft, Seattle might not be able to find a taker, even at a reduced price. The Dolphins, Buccaneers and Cardinals have been mentioned, but all three also appear to be making other running back plans. Alexander has expressed interest in playing for a warm weather team and has been quoted as saying he'd be interested in playing for either the Dolphins or Bucs. But Miami appears to be eyeing a running back in the draft, and Tampa Bay has salary-cap issues that could prevent the team from giving Alexander the kind of long-term contract he is seeking.

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Patrick Surtain
Dolphins
Chiefs
Seahawks
Colts
Mar. 11 - The Seahawks are the leading candidate to pull off a deal for Dolphins cornerback Patrick Surtain, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports. Seattle's interest in Surtain rose when starting CB Ken Lucas signed with the Panthers for six years and $36 million.

According to the Post-Intelligencer, the Dolphins would likely demand a second-round pick. Surtain is believed to be seeking a signing bonus of at least $8 million. He's entering the final year of a contract that pays him $6.15 million in 2005 and has a cap number of $8.383 million. Surtain's name also has been mentioned as a possible trading piece if the Dolphins decide to try to acquire RB Edgerrin James from the Colts.

WHOWHATTHE SKINNY

Jason Taylor
Dolphins
Mar. 10 - The Dolphins are not moving defensive end Jason Taylor to linebacker or trading him to the Colts for Edgerrin James, The Miami Herald reports. Coach Nick Saban on Wednesday ended any further speculation, saying in a statement, "We have no intention of moving or trading Jason Taylor."

Rumors of a position switch, according to The Herald, were fueled by Saban's vague responses on whether Miami's defense will use a 3-4, a 4-3, or perhaps both alignments in 2005. The team also recently added defensive linemen Vonnie Holliday and Kevin Carter. "'Everything we have done is to build our defense around what Jason does best," Saban said. "He's an outstanding player and we want him to be a focal point or our defense. We will use him in schemes that best feature his talent."

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Eddie George
TitansMar. 11 - Titans coach Jeff Fisher told The Tennessean he's open to the possibility of bringing back Eddie George, the franchise's all-time leading rusher.

"I am not ready to put a percentage on it right now, but there is a chance," Fisher said. "I always thought Eddie should finish his career here, but there are a lot of things we have to work through." George said he would welcome the chance to return to Tennessee, and has already discussed it with his agents. George, who had a career-low 432 yards on just 132 carries for the Cowboys last season, was released by Tennessee following the 2003 season.

WHOWHATTHE SKINNY

Kelly Herndon
Broncos
Seahawks
Falcons
Chiefs
Mar. 11 - Broncos CB Kelly Herndon met with the Chiefs on Thursday but left Kansas City without a contract, The Kansas City Stars reports. The Seahawks and Falcons are also pursuing Herndon. Because Herndon is a restricted free agent, Denver has the right to match any offer.

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Ty Law
Patriots
Chiefs
Jets
Mar. 11 - Now that Samari Rolle has signed with the Ravens, the Chiefs may turn their attention toward veteran cornerback Ty Law. According to The Kansas City Star, Law is scheduled meet with the Chiefs on Monday.

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

David Boston
Dolphins
49ersMar. 10 - David Boston, cut by the Dolphins because he failed a physical, could soon find a home in San Francisco, reports the Oakland Tribune. Boston's agent, Mitch Frankel, spoke with 49ers on March 9 and expects to reach a deal soon.

"I would imagine in the next seven days something will happen," Frankel said. "I don't see it stretching much more than that." Boston, 26, missed the entire 2004 season after tearing his left patellar tendon during training camp. Boston had his best seasons in Arizona, where he was tutored by current 49ers receivers coach Jerry Sullivan.

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Anthony Thomas
Bears
SeahawksMar. 10 - Anthony Thomas met with the Seahawks on Wednesday, but the 27-year-old running back left without signing a contract, The Seattle Times reports.

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Ron Dayne
Giants
Texans
Saints
Mar. 10 - The Dolphins canceled their meeting with running back Ron Dayne, The Palm Beach Post reports. The former Heisman winner Ron Dayne was scheduled to visit New Orleans on Tuesday. Dayne had one touchdown and 179 yards rushing last season on 52 carries.

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Rick DeMulling
Colts
Ravens
Lions
Mar. 10 - Guard Rick DeMulling visited with the Lions on Wednesday, but left Detroit without a contract agreement. According to The Baltimore Sun, the Ravens might begin their pursuit of DeMulling by the end of the week. The 27-year-old DeMulling met with the Bills on Monday.

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Peter Boulware
Ravens
Mar. 9 - The Ravens are quietly shopping Peter Boulware around the league, The Baltimore Sun, citing a league source, reports. But GM Ozzie Newsome denied any trade talk. "At this point, Peter is rehabbing," Newsome told The Sun. Boulware is coming off toe surgery.

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Antowain Smith
Titans
SaintsMar. 9 - The Saints are looking at Antowain Smith as a possible backup for Deuce McAllister, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. Smith rushed for 509 yards on 127 carries and four touchdowns last season as Chris Brown's backup in Tennessee.

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Freddie Jones
Cardinals
PackersMar. 8 - The Packers are looking at tight end Freddie Jones either as a replacement for Bubba Franks or as a complement to Franks, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Jones visited the Packers on Monday and is scheduled to meet the Vikings on Tuesday.

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Rod Gardner
Redskins
Vikings
Browns
Seahawks
Mar. 8 - At least three teams are interested in Redskins WR Rod Gardner, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports. Minnesota, Cleveland and Seattle have spoken to agent Joel Segal about his client. Segal was granted written permission by Redskins officials three weeks ago to speak directly to other teams about possible trade scenarios. The Redskins are seeking a middle-round draft choice for Gardner, who has one season remaining, at a base salary of $2.097 million, on the original five-year contract he signed with Washington in 2001.

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Kendrell Bell
Steelers
ChiefsMar. 8 - Linebacker Kendrell Bell and the Chiefs have agreed to a multi-year deal that includes $10 million in guarantees. The Eagles were also interested in Bell, but stopped pursuing him when they re-signed Jeremiah Trotter. Bell, 26, is coming off a season in which he was limited to three games because of a recurring groin injury. He underwent surgery in October to repair a sports hernia. Bell was the NFL's defensive rookie of the year in 2001.

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Keydrick Vincent
Steelers
Browns
Ravens
Mar. 8 - Guard Keydrick Vincent on Tuesday will meet with the Browns and undergo a physical, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. Vincent's agent, Ken Zuckerman, has engaged in "preliminary talks" with the Ravens, but a trip to Baltimore has not yet been scheduled. "I know what I'm going to get [with the Browns and/or Ravens] because I'm familiar with those teams," Vincent told the newspaper. "They're familiar with what I can do. So, staying in this division would make everything easier during the getting-to-know-you process."

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Travis Taylor
Ravens
VikingsMar. 4 - Wide receiver Travis Taylor, a disappointment during his five seasons in Baltimore, visited the Vikings on March 3.

The former 10th overall selection out of Florida has 204 career catches for 2,758 yards and 15 touchdowns. "Travis Taylor is a player that is intriguing," Vikings coach Mike Tice said. "He has not been explosive in this league. You look at that offense and see that not many people have been."

WHOWHATTHE SKINNY

Jerome Bettis
Steelers
Retirement?Mar. 4 - Jerome Bettis has already agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Steelers, but the 33-year-old running back's decision to play his 13th season in the NFL might not come until June 1, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

However, he told The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review he's "leaning toward" coming back." Bettis said he will start working out next week to get an idea if his body can withstand the rigors of another season. "I want to come back, but I am realistic that the possibility exists [that he could retire]," he told The Tribune-Review. "I don't want to lead anyone astray. I'm optimistic, cautiously optimistic."

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Joe Jurevicius
Buccaneers
Giants?Mar. 3 - The Giants are interested in signing Joe Jurevicius, but the veteran receiver doesn't appear ready to sever ties with the Buccaneers, despite being released by the team on March 1.

"[The interest] is very flattering," Jurevicius' agent, Neil Cornrich, told The Tampa Tribune, "but Joe savors his time in Tampa Bay and his contributions to the Super Bowl season. It's going to take something extra special to get him to leave." Jurevicius began his career with the Giants before joining the Bucs in 2002.

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Trevor Pryce
Broncos
?Feb. 28 - The Broncos have decided to shop Pryce, and as many as 10 teams are interested in acquiring the Pro Bowl DE, reports Pro Football Weekly. However, after the first week of free agency, the number of potential suitors could drop significantly. Salary-cap concerns (Pryce has a cap number of $9.16 million for '05) and age (Pryce turns 30 in August) are among the leading factors in to Denver's decision. The team also plans to switch to the 3-4 defense in 2005, and Pryce is better suited for the 4-3 alignment.

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

Travis Henry
Bills
Cardinals
Feb. 28 - Even though the Bills have given the Cardinals permission to arrange for Henry to visit, a trade between the two teams doesn't appear imminent, according to The Arizona Republic.

"We haven't had any talks beyond that," Buffalo president and GM told the paper.

It was previously reported that the Bills are working on a trade that would send Henry to Arizona in exchange for offensive tackle L.J. Shelton, who visited Buffalo and took a physical. However, because Henry has only one year left on his contract, the Cardinals would like to have him signed long term before pulling the trigger on a trade. Another hurdle could be Cardinals coach Dennis Green, who has always preferred speed over power backs. Henry might not be well-suited for the style of offense Green wants to implement.

WHOINTERESTEDTHE SKINNY

L.J. Shelton
Cardinals
Bills
Rams?
Buccaneers?
Bears?
Feb. 28 - The Cardinals have granted Shelton permission to seek a trade, and the left tackle has high value now that Walter Jones has signed a new contract with the Seahawks. Shelton's most likely suitor appears to be Buffalo, but the Cardinals might be backing away from a proposed Shelton-for-Travis Henry swap because Henry has only one year left on his contract. Shelton recently visited Buffalo and underwent a physical. The Rams, Bucs and Bears are also reportedly interested in Shelton.
