This is certainly not going to be easy for Nick Saban. As you can see below, not only do they not have any cap room, but they are over it by 9 millon. Thats a lot of money to try to get rid of.

Well if I were Nick Saban, which means I had the demeanor to rally a group of young guys and get them to learn fundamentals and my system, I think Miami would be a pretty good gig. I'd start off by cutting pretty much all of the big salaries the 'Phins are dealing with right now, and see what I could get for them in trades -- guys like Surtain and Jason Taylor could fetch high-ish draft picks. Saban is fresh out of college, so he knows what this draft has in store, and if he can stockpile high picks he could build himself a nice little core group to build the team around.

On offense, I'd give Feeley another year at QB, still mostly just a stop-gap, and try to convince Ricky to come back and perhaps trade him. Their receivers are good enough now, although they could do with a young fast guy to help stretch the field.

First of all, they need to seriously cut salary. That means Junior Seau and David Boston have to go. I also think they need to pick either Jay Fiedler or AJ Feeley and stick with that person. Cut the other one. But, like Freak said, that person would only be a stop-gap

Secondly, they need to either take Cedric Benson in the draft or trade down and get some additional picks. I think trading down might be a problem, since there arent many standout players in this year's draft. I suppose a team could want to move up to take Benson or Braylon Edwards, but I doubt they would get much. So, take Benson and have him be Ricky Williams without all the emotional problems.

In the passing game, Saban will still have a good reciever in Chris Chambers and Randy McMichael is a good pass-catching TE. So, just build a running team with a good defense, and he'll be fine.

Also, I agree with Freak in trading guys like Surtain and Taylor. I watched quite a few Dolphins games this year, and Taylor seriously regressed this year. I know he made the Pro Bowl, but i think it might have been more name value than anything else. And that name value could get them a pretty good draft pick.

The problem with just "cutting" people is that their signing bonuses are often pro-rated, meaning your still paying their asses after they are gone.

yeah, I realize that. but sometimes you have to do it. I cant imagine Seau and Fiedler have much time left on their contracts anyway, so the cap hit probably wouldnt be huge.

I would trade down for additional picks. I don't love Cedric Benson.

Also, I think it has been proven that neither Feeley or Fiedler can get it done. They need to move on from both of them. The problem of course is that they can't afford to get a free agent QB with ability. Jeff Garcia just got released by the Browns, maybe he'd be a good fit for a couple years.

The RB position is just plain awful, but again they can't really aford to sign Shaun Alexander or someone like that.

Seau has definitely got to go, but I'd also get rid of Sam Madison. His best days are starting to be behind him and his cap number is rediculous.

They have a ton of work to do, when you think about it.

They've been in cap trouble the past few years (the Titans, that is), so they've been cutting guys, but like Simon said, their bonus money gets penalized. So guys like Eddie George are still counting against the cap. Also, some of their guys like Kevin Carter, Brad Hopkins, and Kieth Bullock have pretty high cap numbers

I think I read somewhere that Carter's cap figure for 2004 was 11.3 million, which is like 13% of the cap, or something like that. Add McNair's 10 mil or so, and thats a quarter of the cap going to two players
