Freak Accident Kills Hockey Player
Jan. 22, 2005
Kimberly Houk Reporting

“He was one of those kids who always had a smile on his face, helped you be the best you could.”

A BYU hockey player died after taking a deadly hit by a puck to his chest during a game. Doctors are calling it a freak accident, something that never should have killed the 19-year old man from Alaska.

In a game late last night in Provo, Jaxon Logan took a huge blow to his chest, a slap shot that ended his life. It is a very tragic and unexpected death, but his family and teammates are finding some comfort in knowing that Logan died playing a game he loved.

Jaxon Logan loved playing hockey. Growing up in Alaska he learned how to skate and slap around a puck at a very young age. But the sport that drove his passion wound up tragically ending his life.

Burial in Palmer, Alaska

Emotionally shook up and still not believing in what happened, teammates are coping with a very unexpected death.

Jeremy Weiss, Teammate: “It’s an image that will stick in my head for a long time.”

An image of their teammate struggling to get back to the bench after taking a deadly slap shot to the chest.

Julie Damron: Team Manager: “Jaxon went to the bench, sat down, and then fell over and was unconscious, not breathing, no heartbeat.”

Matt Beaudry, Coach: “It took me 15 to 20 seconds to figure out that he wasn’t breathing.”

Logan was rushed to the hospital where a doctor pronounced him dead. And the only way they could explain how this puck turned deadly was by calling it a freak accident--saying the puck hit Logan so hard, causing his heart to beat irregularly, and sending him into cardiac arrest.

Matt Beaudry, Coach: “Statistically you can’t even calculate trying to recreate that split-second timing that it had to take for that to happen.”

But it did happen and now the rest of the guys that form the Ice Cats team are left trying to make sense of what happened to their friend and teammate, and remembering the guy they say always gave his very best.

Yeah the hockey puck is a bit dangerous if you ask me. These kids shouldn't even bother playing hockey. The NHL is done. So there's really no future in hockey anymore.

i agree. hockey is pointless and boring. the only good part about the NHL was the fights but those hardly took place.
