Well, what's great about this is that the game was only $20. How much can I really regret buying a $20 game? On the other hand I certainly could regret buying a $50 game if I thought I would have been satisfied with the $20 one.

Or you could have just used the 20 bucks towards the 50 and been happier with the results. Now you will end up spending 70 bucks on Madden because if you are any football and video game fan, Madden is the only way to go.

DD's Favorite of All Times

I finally played live and it was fantastic.

Come on Simon, why do you have so much trouble giving any credit to ESPN? At least Mister D acknowledges his obvious bias, which I suffered from for several years.

I honestly doubt how much of a shot you gave ESPN, and I find it highly unlikely that you went 16-0 on the hardest difficulty the first time you played, let alone finished a whole season of such "mediocre" game.

And I'll be the first to admit EA does the Franchise mode better; they always have, and likely always will... that's what they put most of their focus on each and every year. Until this year, Sega could never get a simulated-stats engine right, which was one of the major things that put me off. It's just their gameplay and presentation that's absolutely sick... it looks and feels identical to Sunday Night Football.

There's no way I will be buying Madden. I can only afford to buy video games every once in a while, and there are too many games that I want for me to be buying 2 football games from the same year. I'm very happy with ESPN and it seems to be clearly a much better value for the money.

I played ESPN over the weekend, and I have to say that Madden is so much better its not even funny.

ESPN has lots of bells and whistles that are cool, like the whole SportsCenter thing, and Berman recapping your game at halftime, but the gameplay is terrible. And thats what it all comes down to.

I thought the graphics were better, but not so much better as to make up for mediocre gameplay.

i would give ESPN a 10 on presentation and a 5 on gameplay

When I first played ESPN after years and years of Madden gaming, I would have given it a 5 as well. Half the reason for my disliking ESPN was the simple fact that the "sprint" button is always A (XBox) instead of B on defense like in Madden. But you get used to the differences, and there are A LOT of differences, and you learn to appreciate the different gameplay... a lot. Another thing I hated about ESPN was that you couldn't roll-out to the sideline or drop back twenty yards to open field before passing the ball, you had to step up into the pocket, trust your line and find an open receiver -- like in the real NFL. Madden's pocket, although it improved this year, is still unreliable and you constantly have to roll out and roll out and drop back with a Trent Green or Brett Favre.

So basically, Mister D, I love ESPN and I love ESPN's gameplay, but I see exactly where you're coming from.

Mister D pretty much summed up what I was saying before.

To me gameplay in a football game is much more important than anything else.

Madden's gameplay: 8.5 out of 10

Espn's gameplay: 5 out of 10

Too much of a difference for me to dismiss it.
