Ricky Williams retiring
I just saw on ESPN.com that Ricky Williams of the Miami Dolphins is retiring at the age of 27.

Ricky could have been one of the best ever if he wasnt:
a) crazy
b) a pothead

In case anyone doesnt know what I'm talking about, he had a well-documented social phobia, which was part of the reason he struggled so much when he first came into the league. He couldnt handle the spotlight. Also, he was going to miss the first 4 games of this season anyway, because he tested positive for marijuana twice.

Either way, I literally laughed out loud when I saw that headline. Other people I've talked to said they laughed as well, but because they thought it was some sort of joke. I believed it the second I read it, and it's probably the perfect way for one of the quirkiest, most dysfunctional football stars ever to end his career -- right in his prime, days before training camp. Seriously, Ricky is just... strange. He posed in a wedding dress beside Mike Ditka before ever playing an NFL down, he conducted interviews his first two years in the league with his HELMET on, he was caught driving like 140 MPH a year or two ago... and now he's decided he'd be better off spending his time in Asia for several months, leaving the Dolphins with perhaps the sorriest starting backfield I've ever heard of (AJ Feeley, Travis Minor, Rob Konrad).

Just funny, I think. Sad to see a good player go, but then I've always thought he was pretty one-dimensional and overrated.

I think that was because he had extreme social anxiety. When he started taking Paxil, he started acting more normal.

He has openly said in the past that he is an active pot smoker and has no problem telling anyone about it.

I dont think its THE reason he retired, but maybe it had a little to do with it.

*edit* I looked it up, and i was wrong about the suspension. You get fined 4 games worth of pay for a second infraction, and a 4-game suspension for a third infraction. my bad.

Either way I was pretty shocked to hear of it. But if you look at the Dolphins, they haven't made the playoffs last two years even with Ricky. There is something else that they're missing for sure, one being a quarterback worth a damn.
