This is a discussion on Will Detroit repeat? within the North American Sports forums, part of the Sports Forums category; I think they will if they keep the team together but they will have a hard time winning the east ...

I say no. I think the West still has too many strong teams to bet against them. I like the Rockets and the T-Wolves, and I think the Lakers will still be in the mix, even without Shaq.
The West is good but I would say Detroit will still win. The Rockets are not going to be able to handle it in the playoffs since they hvae never been there before with this team. I am betting that the T-wolves will choke agian and if the lakers lose shaq and kobe i think they ahve no chance and that if they just have kobe he will not be able to carry the team unless payton stays.

The talent among the West's elite seems to be getting diluted to the point where there could be seven teams vying for "powerhouse" position. I don't think any of the teams are unstoppable like the Lakers once were, and the Pistons have proven they can get the job done against legit competition.
Consider that Rasheed Wallace is returning, Antonio McDyess will be joining the team, and Darko might start to become a factor... Detroit looks great.
I'll still say 'no,' just because it's easier to say one of the other 31 teams will win, but Detroit has a fantastic shot at repeating.
I dont really follow the NBA too much, but I will say this. I have never seen a player recieve so much attention and do NOTHING to reward that attention more than Antonio McDyess. What the hell has he ever done except take up too much of the medical staffs time?

He's made his reputation off of 3 game sin the NCAA tournament
One year, he averaged like 30 a game in the tournament, and people had barely heard of him before, and he parlayed it into an overpaid NBA career
Plus, he was one of the many terrible moves that Scott Layden made while running the Knicks. Layden was very possibly the worst GM in the history of the NBA
