Eric Gagne's save streak ends at 84!

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_yl...v=st&type=lgns

Well it's about time! I watched a Dodgers game the other night and when the guy takes the field, they have entrance music for him like he's Stone Cold Steve Austin or something. The crowd goes nuts. I've never seen anything like it for any baseball player, let alone a closing pitcher!

It will be a travesty if that streak doesn't go down in history alongside those of Dimaggio and Ripken... what Gagne did was incredible, and the next-closest guy on the list is miles behind him.

Maybe the most amazing thing about the saves streak is that only ONCE in 84 chances did the tying runner reach third base... and that was when he was called upon to record his first six-out save.

That was incredible. He did, however, get one of those 84 saves on a bullshit strike 3 call against the Yankees a few weeks ago (not that I'm bitter or anything)

Freak, although that streak is amazing. It is NOWHERE near DiMaggios streak of 56 games or Ripkens consecutive streak.

Those two will NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER be touched again. Gagne's although unlikely, could be done again. I really dont see it happening but it could.

Watch him melt down now.

Also D, I watched that game as well between the Yanks and LA. Hahahahhahahahhaha !!

Man, I fucking hate the Yankees.

you'll be happy to know then that i was at Friday's Mets-Yankees game and saw the Yankees get spanked. At least i missed both the Saturday and Sunday games, which they also lost.

They did, however, announce that it was Lindsay Lohan's birthday, which led me to believe she was at the game. Unfortunately none of my friends wanted to scour the stadium looking for her

How is DiMaggio's even close to as untouchable as Gagne's?

Gagne's streak is 84 games, and the next-closest guy pales in comparison at 54 (Flash Gordon), just absolutely pales in comparison. You can multiply Gordon's by one and half, and still be three games short of Gagne's.

Joe hit in 56 straight, while a handful of players have hit in 40+, including two guys at 44. That's coming A LOT closer to DiMaggio than anyone has ever gotten to Gagne. Every year we get a couple guys getting more than halfway to 56, every year without fail.

The only reason you say that is because DiMaggio is DiMaggio.

Sportcenter did an interesting top ten list today about impressive streaks, and they were ranked in order of how far behind (percentage wise) the second place person was. Gagne was number 8 I think.

Is that just for baseball, or all major sports?

Yeah, but umpires do that all the time. If the pitcher is really good, the umpire will often give him the benefit of the doubt (whether he knew it was a fair call or not.) I think it all has to do with respect. Who did he strike out? It was Matsui, right?
