Greatest American Athletes ever

A few years ago, ESPN did a countdown of the 50 greatest "American" athletes of the 20th century (i put American in quotation marks because the list included Canadian hockey players who played in the NHL). Their top 5 was:

5. Wayne Gretzky
4. Jim Brown
3. Muhammed Ali
2. Babe Ruth
1. Michael Jordan

Since I'm a sucker for lists, and they tend to stir up a good deal of debate, I figured I'd give my top (which is only slightly different from ESPN's), as well as my top 5's in each sport

Top 5, All sports

5. Lance Armstrong
4. Wayne Gretzky
3. Muhammed Ali
2. Michael Jordan
1. Babe Ruth

Top 5 Baseball Players (batters only)

5. Ty Cobb
4. Ted Williams
3. Willie Mays
2. Barry Bonds (if hes not on steroids)
1. Babe Ruth

Top 5 football players (Offense only)

5. Johnny Unitas
4. Walter Payton
3. Joe Montana
2. Jerry Rice
1. Jim Brown

Top 5 basketball players

5. Larry Bird
4. Magic Johnson
3. Bill Russell
2. Wilt Chamberlain
1. Michael Jordan

Top 5 hockey players

5. Patrick Roy
4. Bobby Orr
3. Mario Lemieux
2. Gordie Howe
1. Wayne Gretzky

Top 5 individual sports

5. Mike Tyson
4. Carl Lewis
3. Tiger Woods
2. Lance Armstrong
1. Muhammed Ali

could go? Umm Wayne can't play hockey for shit now and MJ is not 35 points a game player now either. Tyson was the shit for a long time and there was no other like him. You need to watch Boxing Classic or Espn classic and see how long ago it actually was he was doing all this.

Tyson in his prime was a sight to behold. An incredible combination of speed, strength, and intensity. I also heard somewhere that Tyson made more money strictly from his sport (not including endorsements) than any other athlete ever

I'm pretty sure he's saying that if you're going to exclude Tyson because he sucks now, then you should exclude Getsky and Jordan since they both suck now too. It was confusing however.

Lol, ya sorry. That is what I get for trying to squeeze a post in between work and the forum.

Tyson sucks now but that shouldn't take away from what he has done in the past. I watch old fights from when he first started and man could he hit. He did it for a long time too.

Thanks DMW for clearing that up. I was rushing my thoughts. Getsky and Jordan were pretty boring in their final run but would you say "maybe they were good for a while"? Tyson is remembered for his power and dominance in the ring before he was remembered for being a bad boxer.

On a side note, I hope that the Tyson Antonio Tarver fight happens. I want to see Antonio Tarver get his ass kicked for beating Jones lol. I am still heart broken that Jones lost that.

Not for nothing, but I think a huge factor is that all his opponents were scared to death of him.

Jim Thorpe oughta be considered for greatest athlete ever, I'd say.

My choices for football would be Jim Brown and Jerry Rice, for hockey it would be Gretzky, Orr and Lemieux.
