Rep Power: 87 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() gXboxLive Leaderboard: 42nd | Boston's "Fab.........four?" I wanted to get the opinion of baseball fans and outsiders that don't dwell on every decision the Red Sox make everyday. In Boston, there is A LOT of talk about the know dubbed "Fab Five". The Fab Five are the five big potentail free agents at the end of the year. The Red Sox brass are going out on a limb and it appears they currently have no plans in the next month or so to sign any of these guys. The Fab Five consists of Pedro Martinez, Derek Lowe, Nomar Garciaparra, Jason Varitek and David Ortiz. The common belief is that Boston can't retain all 5 and would be happy getting two and estatic if they got 3. The fans and media are realistic, with Manny's 20 Million salary and what these guys may get on the open market is just not going to add up for the Sox. I would like to know who you guys would take if you were the Red Sox. I will give you the projected offers that the players have been said to be looking for and their ages and health issues. Please pick two. Thanks Pedro Martinez: Age 31. Looking for 3 years at 15 million a year with player option for 4th year, knowing that he will most likely turn it into a club option. Health issues are a concern for the Red Sox. They have been unable to locate a company that will insure the contract. David Ortiz age 28 Not really sure what he is looking for, but I have heard 2 years at 8 million a year. There is no way he will get that much. Someone will offer him 3 years at 6 million a year. But look for the Sox to make a nice run for him. Nomar Garciaparra age 31 Turned down a 4 year 60 million dollar deal at the end of last season and has since turned down a 12 million a year offer from the Sox. There is ALOT of speculation that he was deeply hurt by the Arod to Boston trade talks and there is thought around the town that he wants to play in LA anyway. Not many people around here think he will be back. Derek Lowe age 30. Scott Boras is his agent. The Sox dont get along with Boras. Derek Lowe is not the typical sabermetric type of pitcher that the Sox like to utilize. He also wears his emotions on his sleeve, often spouting out to the media. He has already said that he will test the market this fall and I bet that he will most likely head to a team making way more than he should. Jason Varitek Also a Scott Boras client. But one big difference. The Sox teammates, front office, Media and 100% of Red Sox fans are in love with Varitek. Only problem is rumors have Buck Showalter(spelling?) and the Rangers salivating over his services. But the bottom line is I think he will be back. He loves Boston and Boston loves him. If I had my choice of only two players, I guess I would take Varitek and Pedro. Even though Pedro is one of my least favorite Red Sox players ever, he is damn good. Thanks for reading a post about a city that you most likely don't give a damn about. It was spawned by Freaks 49er post. I enjoy giving opinions and hearing them about different teams throught sports. Simon

Plus, like you said, Boston loves him and he loves Boston. Lowe probably has one of the best sinkers in the league. You cant lose both Pedro and Lowe and hope to rely on a 39-year old Schilling to hold down the rotation Nomar's feelings are hurt, which apparently is a big deal to him. As good as he is, he might not be worth the money/trouble Pedro is definitely in the downside of his career. Not worth the money hes gonna want. and hes a pain in the ass Pedro and Nomar will probably command the most money of those three, so the money saved on those two can probably get you all 3 listed above

Rep Power: 9 ![]() | I'd say Pedro and Veritek as well. I don't think any of them would be huge losses. I think Ortiz is overrated... he reminds me of Mo Vaughn. Lowe's decent but expendable, and for whatever reason, Nomar seems to be a shell of the player he used to be, and will be offered way too much money this offseason. |

Lol, I mentioned the Ortiz/Mo Vaughn comparision to the local sports radio station a while ago and they were all amazed they didnt notice it a long time ago. The similarities are uncanny. I think Nomar goes to LA.

True true. Also, on a side note. Pokey Reese has better offensive numbers that Jeter and makes 17 million less a year. Bahhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaa!!

Rep Power: 8 ![]() | I'm very happy about this. I knew they wouldn't give up Ortiz. Furthermore, I think Derek Lowe should be replaced by Mike Timlin as a starting pitcher. Timlin deserves it a helluva lot more than Lowe. If you don't agree, you're gay. |
