Rep Power: 24 ![]() ![]() | Season tickets=Free beer! www.wftv.com/ Tampa Bay Lightning Offers Free Beer To Season Ticket Buyers POSTED: 6:47 am EDT May 12, 2004 TAMPA, Fla. -- A Tampa Bay Lightning promotion that offers unlimited free beer to people who agree to buy season tickets is drawing the ire of safe-driving advocates. Local police and several area chapters of Mothers Against Drunk Driving say the hockey team's offer is irresponsible. "Why attach alcohol to a season-ticket plan? It's almost encouraging people to drink more than they should because it is free," said Sgt. Chris Velar, who runs the Tampa Police Department's DUI squad. During the first Eastern Conference playoff game between the Lightning and the Philadelphia Flyers Saturday, the St. Pete Times Forum's main scoreboard advertised the offer, which allowed people who paid $100 toward 2004-05 season tickets to be eligible for unlimited free beer during the game. About 25 of the 21,000 people at the game signed up for season tickets, said team spokesman Bill Wickett. There are already safeguards in place at the arena to stop irresponsible behavior. People who are already intoxicated aren't served and free taxi rides are provided to patrons who believe they have had too much to drink, Wickett said. But some said that's not enough, and the offer should be dropped. "It seems we take one step forward and they took two steps back. It's advertising irresponsible behavior. It's a huge insult to our community," said Becky Gage, the victim services director for the Hillsborough County chapter of MADD. Free beer isn't the only way the team is trying to attract season ticket holders, Wickett said. During the second playoff game Monday, people signing up for season tickets entered in a lottery to win a trip to Philadelphia. |
