Steroids in Baseball

I find it interesting that Roger Maris had an * next to his record for years due to the fact that he played in 9 more games than Babe Ruth. But yet not one person will even consider doing the same to Barry Bonds.

I will throw more stats out later on Homeruns/Steriod ratio. But for now consider this......

Roger Maris held the record for 61 homeruns for some 37 years until Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire broke it the same year. Since 1997 when McGwire and Sosa broke the record, 61 homeruns has been surpassed numerous times.

But yet before last years baseball season, it was agreed upon that there would be drug testing. Not ONE person hit 50 homeruns last year. Coinscience? I think not.

Below is a picture of Jason Giambi showing up to camp yesterday. Sure looks like he has been watching his weight all of a sudden doesnt it? He claims he cut fast food out of his diet.

And this is when he ate more cheeseburgers three years prior

First of all, I hate *'s in record books.

Second, I believe Barry Bonds beat all records for homeruns, even when taking into account the number of games it took, so he certainly doesn't deserve one. I'm actually not sure about that, but I believe that's the case.

As for Giambi, he was a little fat when he started playing in Oakland, and over the course of his career he's been getting slimmer each year. That picture doesn't look odd to me.

I'm praying this BALCO trial turns out to be nothing of substance. I don't advocate the use of steroids in sports, but I would hate to see some of sports greatest accomplishments stricken from the record books because of something that probably didn't make that much difference. When Barry Bonds hit 73 homeruns, he wasn't muscling end of the bat shots just barely into the bleachers. He was making solid contact and hitting them about 450 feet. If he was on steroids, then without them those balls would've still gone about 440 feet. Not to mention that altering the record books doesn't work because everyone will know that Barry Bonds has hit the most homeruns in a season, and until someone breaks his record, he will remain the true homerun king in most people minds, and it's a shame to complicate such cool records.

Umm I don't get your point. So he was fat now thin. Since when does seroids make you fat and have a beer belly? he didn't even have that much muscle mass. Look at his shoulders. they are not even close to being muscular

I am confused.

On a side note, it's sad to see what a metrosexual New York has made out of Giambi.

IdaMAN, Your trying to tell me that he doesnt look much bigger in that A's uniform? He had a little gut but he was definetly much more muscular then. MUCH. That is not the best picture. I will look for better examples.

And DMW. To suggest that Steriods only enhance your power by 10 feet is so ridiculous that i can't even begin to tell you how wrong you are.

The art of swinging at bat is a wonderful thing and yes, Barry Bonds is one of the best hitters of all time. He didnt just decide one day that he would hit 70 homeruns just because he wanted to, since he is that good.

Also, lets pretend that steriods only enhance your power by some 10 feet. How many times in the course of a year do you think the average power hitter reaches the warning track? With steriods those could now make it up to the 3rd row for a bloop dinger.

It just seems so obvious to me.

I have some muscle mass and when I am heavier due to fat I look bigger in muscle. When you lose weight you lose muscle mass as well.

A little gut? lol. He was FAT! he harly have any signs of roid use. Look at his neck. His lower body looks thin. His face is fat and he just looks out of shape with some muscle mass.

I'm not saying that steroid use equates to 10 more feet of distance, I'm saying that hitting a homerung is all about timing and hitting the ball on the right part of the bat, meaning that some extra strength isn't going to make much difference if you hit the ball the right way, which Barry normally does when he hits a homerun. Strength does not equal distance when you're talking about hitting. Look at Brett Boone. I've seen that guys hit some bombs.

Of course strength does have something to do with homerun hitting, but I don't think steroid use would make *that* much difference. And to answer that question posed in your original post, no, I don't think the decline in homeruns has been a coincidence. Pitchers are just getting better and smarter. Looking at the two players idscussed in this post, both Giambi and Bonds had higher HR/AB in 2003 than they did in 2002. The quality of pitching is getting better and the big guys aren't getting pitched to as much.

Jasons not on roids man.

To prove to you hes not on roids look at Arnie when he was in his prime and than look at Jason. Still not convinced look at Scott Steiner, now look at Jason. If anything Jason went on the subway diet, because they really keep an eye on that shit now.

here is a pic of him in shape and not fat.

he looks like someone who works out and pays baseball for a living in this pic. It just looks like he gained a lot of weight and then lost it and got in better shape.
