NHL trades

With the deadline quickly approaching, here's a thread to keep track of all new & upcoming trades in the NHL. So far the more noted ones have been:

Mike Comrie traded from Philly to Pheonix for Sean Burke.

Peter Bondra traded from Washington to Ottawa.

Steven Sullivan traded from Chicago to Nashville for a couple of draft picks!?! (WTF!)

And this just in, Alexei Zhamnov traded from Chicago to Philly for Colin Fraser, Jim Vandermeer, and a 2nd round draft pick in 2004.

Ugh...I think I'm gonna puke after hearing those last two. What the hell are the Blackhawks thinking?!

Sure would have been nice to see the Canucks add any one of those players. Right now I'm praying they can land Robert Lang.

It looks like Toronto is close to acquiring Sergei Gonchar.

I am hoping Turek is being traded. Near the start of February the Flames signed a 5th goalie. So either Kiprusoff and Turek being injured got Sutter worried or he is looking to trade. Or they are just wasting money

I've come to the conclusion that Chicago will never get anywhere. Whenever they get good players, they trade them away because they can't afford them. We saw it with Belfour, Chelios, Roenick, etc. and now Sullivan & Zhamnov. They only way this can be avoided is if players are willing to accept less money.

Despite this obvious observation, I'll always support the team in hopes that somehow we see another Stanley Cup...someday.

Flames have done the same thing a lot. Knowing them they will be getting rid of Iginla for a draft pick and get rid of Kiprusoff before Turek

Cyrus, my man, what do you think of this:

Blackhawks trade Nieminen to Calgary

February 24, 2004

CHICAGO (AP) -- The Chicago Blackhawks acquired forward Jason Morgan and a conditional draft pick from Calgary on Tuesday in a deal that sent forward Ville Nieminen to the Flames.

Nieminen, signed as a free agent from Pittsburgh in July 2003, had two goals and 11 assists for the Blackhawks this season.

Morgan has six goals and 13 assists in 21 games for Lowell in the American Hockey League. He also had two assists in 13 games with Calgary this season.

Also, the Blackhawks recalled forward Matt Keith from Norfolk of the AHL and claimed winger Eric Nickulas off waivers from St. Louis.

Keith was Chicago's second-round draft pick in the 2001 draft. He had 12 goals and 13 assists with Norfolk.

Nickulas had seven goals and 11 assists for St. Louis this season.

Nothing big really, Nieminen never lived up to the small hype he had in Colorado, and has bounced around since then. And Calgary desperately needs someone to ease the scoring bulk from Iginla's shoulders, not another 3rd rate wing.

Career potential = checking line or 4th line

Enjoy the firesale Bouchie, its another joy of supporting a small-budget/penny pinching team.

Here's some of the more notable new ones.

Nathan Dempsey traded from Chicago to Los Angeles for draft picks.

Alex Kovalev traded from NY Rangers to Montreal.

Sergei Gonchar traded from Washington to Boston.

Very pumped about the Kovalev trade to the Habs. They did give up one of their top 3 prospects in Josef Balej, but hopefully Kovie can regain his scoring touch with Montreal, and he's defintely going to contribute on the powerplay.

Imagine Kovalev-Koivu-Zednik or even Kovalev-Ribeiro-Ryder

~Drool~

And man Washington has at least 3 first round draft picks from unloading Lang, and Gonchar. They really should have gotten a couple first picks from New York, at least one in addition to Anson. Stupid McPhee.

On a side note, just imagine if the Caps win the draft lottery this year and grab Alexander Ovechkin, or even the Blue Jackets. Nash, Zherdev, Svitov, Ovechkin, Klesla, Leclaire....scary.

Man, looks like a lot of non-playoff contenders are just calling it a season and clearing out the roster payroll. Can't wait to see what else happens before the trade deadline.
