Frank Thomas Signs with the Toronto BlueJays

TORONTO -- The Toronto Blue Jays finalized a two-year, $18 million contract with veteran slugger Frank Thomas on Friday.

The Blue Jays reached a tentative deal with the 38-year-old designated hitter Wednesday night and spent Thursday wrapping up the details.

The contract includes a $10 million option for the 2009 season.

Thomas led the Oakland Athletics with 39 homers and 114 RBI, batting .270 in 2006. He takes over Toronto's vacant DH spot.

In 17 big-league seasons, Thomas has hit .305 with 487 home runs and 1,579 RBI.

It's a nice move for Toronto I suppose. Frank had a good year last year. Not sure if he's worth what he's getting but sometimes you have to overpay for talent. I'm sure this move will only further the Bonds to the A's rumors.

He played like 100 combined games the years prior to this year, and he wasn't quite as good as it seemed last year, when you look at his overall numbers (.270 batting average, well below his career .305 average, .381 OBP, his second lowest in a full season, .545 Slugging percentage, which is pretty good, but nothing THAT special), he's 39 years old, and can't play the field.

It's an ok signing, but I wouldn't be going crazy if I were a Blue Jays fan

It will be tough for him to get injured at DH. But you never know.

Good comeback year for Thomas definitly...

I think it's a good signing but they need to keep Vernon Wells. That should be their top priority. I heard they don't think they'll be able to sign him, well they need to find a way.

This opens the door for Bonds in Oakland by the way.

Thing is, the Jays probably can't afford to pay Wells the money he wants to keep him, so a lot of fans are advocating trading him before we lose him for nothing (see: Carlos Delgado).

Wells is one of my favourite players, but if we could trade him to the Angels for a package of good prospects, I think I'd do it. Especially if Rios can step in at CF and play like he did last year.

I don't know what Wells is looking for, but I know it's a lot. I actually have trouble quantifying large numbers and sizes and distances to begin with, so I'm not the person to ask. But it's the type of deal that could really mess up the Jays payroll.

As for Thomas, I'm pleased with the signing. It's not a huge contract, and it gives the Jays a really nice 3-4-5, with Wells-Thomas-Glaus, along with guys like Overbay and Rios in the lineup.

It's a risk, yeah, but whatever.
