O.J. Mayo Signs with USC

NOVEMBER 15, 2006 -- WSAZ has learned that Huntington High School basketball star O.J. Mayo has signed with the University of Southern California.

The 6'5" senior had verbally committed to USC and coach Tim Floyd earlier, but several coaches and programs had tried to lure the phenom to their place. Kentucky, Louisville, Kansas State, and Florida were also after him. This will give him a year to concentrate on his high school season.

"I think USC is the best situation for me," Mayo said. "It's the perfect opportunity with coach (Tim) Floyd there. He coached in the NBA and knows what it take to reach the league."

Mayo plans to make it official Thursday at a signing ceremony at Huntington High School.

Is this just a technicality now, with the new rules? Ie. the kid will play one season at USC, whether he gets generous playing time or not, and then declare for the NBA Draft?

I'd expect that's what the dude at Ohio State is going to do. It doesn't help the college game one bit. I actually liked the college game. Most of the projected draft picks went pro right away so we got to see 3 or 4 good years out of the other guys.. It made everyone familiar with the talent again..

Now guys like this will come in and dominate but boom.. they'll be in the pros before you know it. No time to like them.

Would it be totally unreasonable for them to adopt a policy like the NFL, where the kids have to be at least three years removed from high school?

Probably, I guess. I mean, I think the NFL rule is in place largely because teenagers simply CAN'T match up to NFL athletes in such a physical game, and it protects the players -- whereas the NBA is a much less physical game, and rookies are able to come in right away and excel.

God forbid they attend class and learn something. It's pretty sad when you know most of them will never earn a dime in the NBA and you also know that they aren't trying to do a damn thing with their scholarship. I love how the University pisses away money on these athletes while there's millions of kids who'd love to just be attending a class.

For every LeBron James, there's a Leon Smith

For every Carmelo Anthony, there's an Omar Cook

It would be better for the players, colleges, and pro teams if the NBA had a rule like the NFL has. But, they don't so we're going to have to continue to watch shitty, fundamental-less basketball. Awesome
