I saw this on another board, but its ag ood thread. He's less than a 100 hits away. Did anyone even know he was that close to 3,000? Shit I know I didnt. I thought he was a pretty good player, but never knew he was that good.

He's been around for so long. He's had a few stellar seasons and not too many bad ones, so the hits do add up over time. Him getting 3,000 hits is more a sign of his longevity than him being an amazing hitter. He's good, don't get me wrong, but definitely not in the Tony Gwynn, Wade Boggs mold - as far as pure hitting skills go.

I'd have to say he is.. I heard somewhere that he was getting close, I've always known him to be a solid player, but I never knew he had this many hits. Still.. all the members of the 3000 hit club are in the hall of fame, could he be the 1st left out?
I would have been suprised if he WASNT close. Shit, the guy has been on the Astros since B-Money was in diapers.
Wait, that means he could have joined the team last year.
What I am trying to say is he has been on the team for what seems like close to 20 years. I am sure its not that long, but when you think of the Astros you used to think of Jeff Bagwell and Craig Biggio.
What most people forget is that he played quite a few seasons as a catcher, then second base then centerfield.
Talk about going up the middle. Weird position changes.
He should be appauled for making those career changes just as much as the 3,000 hits.

What does stand out is he's 12th in Doubles, and his obp is pretty sweet. Not to mention how long he's been able to stay healthy. I think he'll make it in the hall of fame...

I don't think he's going to make it. Looking at those stats, he's a very solid player, and he has pretty much stayed injury free, but I think he's more of a compiler.
