The Hatters revealed on Friday that Newell had concurred on a new four-year deal to stay at the Kenilworth Road helm. Chairman Bill Tomlins announced the news after Newell had been linked with the managerial vacancy at Leicester City. But, following Luton's 1-0 win over Derby County on Saturday, Newell revealed that he has yet to glance over the club's latest contract offer. "I haven't signed a new contract and I haven't agreed anything," affirmed Newell. "A new contract was sent to my solicitor yesterday, but I haven't seen it yet and I doubt whether my solicitor has even had a chance to read it. "People are jumping the gun here a little bit. "I'm happy here and I don't anticipate there being a problem, but I get a bit frustrated at times when people put things out that shouldn't be put out." Newell, who has spent almost three years in charge of The Hatters, acknowledged he was both surprised and annoyed by his chairman's announcement. He added: "Surprised isn't the word. "I was watching the racing at Cheltenham when my phone started buzzing and beeping with messages from people saying 'congratulations on your new four-year deal' so I turned over to see what they were reading. "In a way it's nice the club want me to stay, but I'm annoyed at the way it's come out. "I wouldn't put things out in public when they haven't been agreed." league 1 Saturday, 18th March League 1 15:00 Blackpool 1 - 0 Port Vale 15:00 Bournemth 1 - 0 Yeovil 15:00 Bradford 1 - 4 Oldham 15:00 Bristol City 6 - 0 Gillingham 15:00 Chesterfield 1 - 2 Scunthorpe 15:00 Colchester 1 - 0 Swindon 15:00 Doncaster 1 - 2 Nottm Forest 15:00 Hartlepool Utd 1 - 1 Barnsley 15:00 Huddersfield 4 - 1 Rotherham 15:00 MK Dons 2 - 1 Southend Friday, 17th March League 1 19:45 Swansea 2 - 1 Brentford 19:45 Tranmere 1 - 2 Walsall Tuesday, 14th March League 1 19:30 Scunthorpe 2 - 0 Hartlepool Utd 19:45 Rotherham 2 - 0 Oldham Williams eyes Seaside stay Blackpool's match-winner on Saturday Gareth Williams has confirmed his determination to win a permanent contract at Bloomfield Road. Seasiders manager Simon Grayson swooped to land Williams on a loan deal from Colchester at the tail end of last week and the player made an immediate impression for his new side. Williams claimed the only goal as Blackpool defeated Port Vale 1-0 to boost their hopes of League One survival and the player now hopes to secure his own future. "I'm here in the hope of securing a future for myself and my family, so we'll see what manager Simon Grayson has to say about it," said Williams. "I scored a hat-trick against Port Vale in Phil Parkinson's first game in charge of Colchester and I've scored once against them since, so this goal makes it five in four games against them. A 1-0 home defeat to Cheltenham Town on Saturday saw Chester sink to the bottom of League Two after just one win in 16 league matches. The run leaves The Blues staring at a return to The Conference, with Wright yet to work the oracle since his return to the helm. Wright has picked up just one point in four games since replacing Keith Curle as manager, but he is upset with the club's supporters. He believes his players were unfairly barracked during Saturday's setback and has blasted a group of Chester fans. "I heard some of the crowd shouting 'what a loud of rubbish', but that's nonsense," said Wright. "That's people who don't understand football, and I will have a go at them. "If they want this club to stay up, then that sort of criticism and negativity during a game is unwarranted and stupid. "If we'd played badly we'd take it on the chin, but that wasn't the case. We were very, very unlucky." | ||||||||||||||
