Points: 59,240, Level: 100 | | ESPN NFL Insider for July 24th. | WHO | WHAT | THE SKINNY | Chris Brown
Titans | Trade? | Browns wants out According to the Tennessean, Brown's agent, Wynn Silbermann, has presented a formal request for a trade to the Titans. Brown is projected to be the starter this season, but figures to share carries with a pair of newcomers -- Travis Henry, acquired in a trade with the Buffalo Bills prior to last season, and second-round pick LenDale White.
"We're kind of looking at the situation down there and we're not sure he's a great fit at this point," said Silberman, who took over as Brown's agent earlier this year, replacing Bralyn Bennett.
"We feel he's a featured back with Pro Bowl potential and the opportunity may be better for him somewhere else in the league."
Titans general manager Floyd Reese has yet to comment, but last June, Reese said he liked the situation at running back, and downplayed speculation that one of the veterans was being shopped. "I haven't talked to anybody about it," Reese said at the time. "It is ridiculous." | | Friday, July 21 | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Dwight Smith
Saints | Buccaneers? Cowboys? | Smith has plenty of suitors Released by the Saints on July 20, Smith won't be on the market for long. The five-year veteran is expected to be pursued by several teams, including Tampa Bay, where Smith began his career in 2001. The Cowboys are among the teams with a pressing need for a ballhawking free safety, but it's unclear if they're interested in the 27-year-old, notes ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli. The Saints shopped Smith for much of the offseason but could not find a deal to their liking. | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Dan Wilkinson
Lions | Dolphins | Wilkinson still on Miami's radar The Dolphins continue to stay in contact with Wilkinson, released by the Lions earlier in the spring, according to ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli. Wilkinson has considered retirement, but the free-agent defensive tackle would probably play in 2006 if the money was right, and if he can avoid most of the early rigors of training camp. | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Michael Bennett
Saints | Dolphins? Texans? Chiefs? Rams? | Bennett deal on hold The Saints have at least four teams after Bennett, but it wouldn't make sense for them to trade the running back before a Reggie Bush deal is done, writes ESPN.com's John Clayton. If Bush becomes a long holdout, the Saints would have to give Deuce McAllister the bulk of the work in training camp. Coming off major knee surgery, that would be too much to ask of McAllister. Once Bush is signed, then things should start moving. Bennett is the target of the Dolphins, Texans, Chiefs and Rams. | | Tuesday, July 11 | | WHO | WHAT | THE SKINNY | Priest Holmes
Chiefs | Return? | Holmes' future still unclear While Holmes has expressed his desire to play in 2006, his personal trainer, Bremond McClinton, said Monday that Holmes' status is still in limbo, the Kansas City Star reports. The 32-year-old suffered head and neck trauma after a helmet-to-helmet collision Oct. 30 in San Diego.
Holmes said he'd leave it in his doctors' hands to decide whether and when he'd play. He told the San Antonio Express-News that Los Angeles-based spinal surgeon Robert Watkins has warned him about the long-term effects of reinjury and that he's taking it seriously. "It's not what it will do to me today," Holmes said. "It's what it will do when I'm 40 or 50." | | Monday, July 10 | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | T.J. Duckett
Falcons | Steelers? | Duckett off the market? According to Pro Football Weekly, the Falcons no longer plan to trade Duckett before training camp begins. However, if rookie Jerious Norwood has an outstanding camp, Atlanta might consider Duckett expendable and be inclined to put the five-year veteran back on the trading block. The Steelers were among the teams that made an offer for Duckett this offseason. Pittsburgh drafted Virginia Tech running back Cedric Humes in the seventh round, but is believed to be interested in adding a short-yardage back to complement Willie Parker. | | WHO | WHAT | THE SKINNY | Oakland | Running back | Raiders seeking RB help The Raiders would love to add a running back for depth behind LaMont Jordan and might look to the early round of training-camp cuts for just such a candidate, according to Pro Football Weekly. Justin Fargas, No. 2 on the depth chart, is considered little more than a special-teams guy, and part-time FB Zack Crockett, although reliable in the past, is not someone capable of carrying a sizable load. | | Saturday, July 8 | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Junior Seau
Dolphins | Raiders? | Seau not ready to call it quits Released by the Miami Dolphins this spring, after injuries limited him to only 15 appearances in the past two seasons combined, Seau apparently wants to try to squeeze one more year out of a career that likely will land him in the Pro Football Hall of Fame one day, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports. There have been unsubstantiated reports that Seau or his representative spoke with Oakland Raiders officials. | | Thursday, July 6 | | WHO | WHAT | THE SKINNY | Ashley Lelie
Broncos | Trade | Lelie playing hardball Lelie doesn't plan to take part in Denver's mandatory three-day minicamp (July 6-8), and the wide receiver appears to be holding firm on his threat to sit out the season unless he's traded.
The Broncos shopped Lelie during April's draft but could not find a satisfactory deal. It's believed Denver is trying to secure a tight end in return for Lelie, but contrary to published reports, the team has not offered the 26-year-old to the Patriots for Daniel Graham, according to ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli. The Broncos have made it clear to potential Lelie suitors that they want more than a late-round draft pick or a backup player for Lelie. Lelie, who is entering the final year of his contract, forfeited a $100,000 bonus by not participating in Denver's offseason conditioning program. If he follows through on his threat to sit out the season, he'll lose another $1.3 million in salary and bonuses. He also faces possible fines by the team. | | Monday, June 19 | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Vinny Testaverde
Jets | Browns? | Vinny and the Browns? With no experienced backup to 24-year-old starting quarterback Charlie Frye, the Browns might attempt to land Testaverde before the 42-year-old files his retirement papers, according to multiple reports.
"It certainly wouldn't be unattractive to him to be reunited with [head coach Romeo Crennel]," Testaverde's agent, Mike Azzarelli, told The Plain Dealer. "And there's no reason he wouldn't return to Cleveland. He certainly had a good time there."
Crennel has yet to speak to Testaverde, and admits he's not sure whether the veteran quarterback wants to endure the grind of another season. "I have no idea at all," said Crennel, who knows Testaverde well from their time together with the N.Y. Jets in the late 1990s. "He might tell me to go take a swim. I don't know because I haven't spoken with him. But if it's not him, then we'll take the next guy." | | Thursday, June 15 | | WHO | INTERESTED | THE SKINNY | Daniel Graham
Patriots | Broncos? | Graham staying put Just before the Patriots began their final day of mini-camp on Thursday, their head coach offered a final word on the trade rumors surrounding Graham.
"We have not had a single discussion about trading Daniel Graham," Bill Belichick told ESPN.com. "We will not trade Daniel Graham this year. End of story."
The rumors of a Graham deal surfaced shortly after a broadcast report that the Broncos were working on a three-team trade that would send wide receiver Ashley Lelie elsewhere, and bring them a tight end in return. Graham was never cited in the initial report. Somehow, though, his name became linked to the rumors, which have escalated in recent days. Graham, a Denver native, is considered one of the best blocking tight ends in football. The four-year veteran is entering the final year of his contract, which might be one reason he's been the subject of trade speculation. |
