Boston Celtics at the end of the year get 20 million off the books with Ray Allens expiring contract. Now this is what I don't get. People keep saying we have little to chance of signing LeBron or Wade in the offseason because we "aren't really going to be able to spend 20 million on a player"
Why?
Is it just that more teams can offer him more? I know there is only so much money a player can make unless he stays with the same team.
So is this a matter of LeBron is going to make like 30 million, therefore the C's won't have another 10 million to come up with since its tied into Pierce and KG or is there some stupid ass rule that I don't know about.
Just looking for some 411. I fully admit I dont really understand the NBA salary cap.

Could be something like they needed to get rid of him and get that 20m to use on players that might have renegotiated their contracts and asked for a little extra which will have to come out of that 20m.
I don't know much either as i don't follow NBA but that could be one of the reasons that 20m may not be avaliable.
A lot of that 20 mill is probably going toward either reworking contracts/filling holes.
Were talking about going against teams with upwards of 40mill, or higher coming off the books in NY, Miami and other wise. Enough for resigning there stars and getting another max player like Wade, Bosh or a guy like Amare.
Not to mention Teams like Toronto, Miami and Cleveland are all going to be offering a 6th year on a Max deal while the salary cap is going to drastically change in the next 1-2 years. 20 mill doesn't really compete with those kind of options out there.

Ok, so for the NBA there's TWO salary caps, there's a hard cap, and a soft cap. The soft cap is the FA "signing" cap if you will. It's set around $56 million, if you're over this cap, it's all right, and you can go over this cap when re-signing your own players with Bird Rights(three consecutive years with the team + more factors that I'll explain if you want) then there's a hard cap that's something like 90 million you CANNOT go over this cap no matter what. No team is really near that as far as I know. Now because the Celts are obviously over the $56 million cap I think they're at 85 million or so, so Ray's 20 mil coming off the books still leaves them at 65 million. Therefore they cannot sign any free agents(except at league minimum)

So basically the C's don't get anything back for letting Allen walk? That seems crazy. I know only a small portion of it is even being used to pay Rondo's contract.
There is also the mid level exception at 5 million which I keep hearing they are eligible to use.
Also, when people are saying "Well, there are teams like the Knicks etc that have 40 million coming off the books etc etc", that doesnt mean they can sign James for that much, right? Isnt there only so much he can earn unless he signs with the Cavs with the Bird Rule as SS stated?
It basically sounds like the C's could be back in cap hell with the big three.....that doesnt seem like something Ainge would do. He seems much smarter than that......i dunno.
I'm going to try and tackle this bit by bit so bare with me if this post become Assassin like.

The C's do not get anything back in 2009-10 if they simply let Allen walk because they are so far over the cap with KG/PP's combined $40 million. However if they trade him, and get someone in return for him. Once 2011 hits and PPs 21 mil come off the books, then they'll have cap room. And yes, Rondo's cap figure goes from around 2.5 mil to 9 mil next year.

As far as I know they have a the MLE next year. Which means they can sign a player or multiple players for up to the league average salary next year(which is yet to be determined)

Ok, so here's this scenario New York has around $57 million coming off the books for 2010/11 their total committed salary(assuming Curry/Jeffries exercise their player options) for 2010/11 is 27 million. The max any team can offer LeBron James(a 7 year veteran) is $11 million/10% backloaded over 5 years. The Cavaliers, being James' current team, can offer him an extra year. So ultimately he makes more money in that sixth year of the contract.
Now, to go a bit further into max contracts, players with 6- years of experience can earn a maximum of $9 million the first year, 7-9 years is $11 million, and 10+ years is $13 million.
Ultimately what it comes down to is, the Knicks and the Cavs can offer the same exact contract with the Cavs contract having one extra year.

Well Paul Pierce technically has a player option for 2010, but I doubt he declines it at $21 million, after 2010, they are under the cap again, and after 2011, KG is off the books, so it's really only 2010 they are in "cap hell"
They do have options through exceptions though, they have the aforementioned MLE, and the Minimum Salary Exception, they can sign anyone up to two years for the league minimum, and they might have their Bi-Annual exception of up to $1.7 million. the Bi-Annual exception has the same rules as the MLE, except it has a max of two years, and can't be used in consecutive years.
Happy to answer any other questions, and to clarify if needed.

Mike did a great job of explaining this but don't try and remember everything DD because with the CBA coming up in 2011, it looks like we may be heading towards a strike anyway.. and shit will start changing again.
Here's all you really need to know.. The Celts are not going to be in the LeBron/Wade sweepstakes.. and that's why they are shopping Ray Allen because he's their only chance of adding a piece for the future. KG and Pierce aren't going anywhere.
Great post Mike. That really helps explain shit quite a bit.
Another LeBron question.....
Wouldn't it be benefical for James to sign a shorter deal so he can get more tenure in the league therefore expanding his overall worth in a max contract deal?
Seems insane that Ray Allen can make 20 million a year and James is only eligible for 11 a year. The NBA cap is a fucking mess.......
