I like that the defence against those attacks on soccer is, "but Rugby players don't wear pads."
I actually enjoy soccer, at least the World Cup, but I felt like this years tournament showed a lot of what is wrong with the game. Way too many games were decided by penalty kicks that are awarded based on completely subjective calls. The referee is way too big a part of soccer, and no referee should ever have that kind of power. Then to see the final decided on a shootout is the dumbest thing ever. I defy any soccer (or futbal) fan to defend that. Finally, an unacceptable number of games end in a tie (especially a 0-0 tie).
I think the sport needs to change the offsides rule, and maybe make the goals bigger so that final scores are more like baseball scores (eg. 6-4). Then completely overhaul the penalty system. Like it said in Dak's list, in American football, you don't get awarded a surefire shot at a touchdown for roughing the kicker. (A more acurate analogy would be to say you aren't awarded 3 touchdowns, since one goal in soccer is the equivalent of atleast that much.) If all this happened, games would always be decided through regular gameplay instead of this shootout crap A shootout could almost qualify as a completely different sport and should never, ever be used to decide a game. It's like an NBA game being decided with a 3 point shootout.
It amazes me that the game so blatantly flawed, but no one wants to do anything about it because that's how it's always been.
I think we're finally starting to uncover why Americans don't like soccer.
The one thing I agree totally on is the penalty kicks deciding a match especially a World Cup final. I'm not taking anything away from Italy, someone had to win and they did.. but to me, I'd like to see the game go on until there is an actual goal scored, in actual play..
You could do it two ways..
1. Golden Goal. Play overtime periods of sudden death.. and if you think people would just bitch out and not attack, then you roll with two..
2. Overtime periods until the score is no longer a tie. This is how we decide basketball, not sudden death..more like how you guys do the two 15 minute periods. Lets see more of that...
Also, if you think they'll get too tired then add a sub or two somewhere along the way...
That's how I'd change it, but I'm American so most people will just say "you have your sports, we have ours.. etc.. etc.."
What most don't understand is that Americans do enjoy some soccer.. especially during the World Cup, we just don't treat it as number one in our eyes because of a number of issues, and what I just mentioned is one of them.
At the end of the day if your Football was better than our Football wouldnt it be a worldwide sport?
Well it depends by what you mean.. Don't the NFL Europe games get good attendence?
Canada has had the CFL for 100 years and the NFL is very popular there..
Mexico loves the NFL
Japan loves the NFL
Just because they don't have their own leagues yet, I don't think it means they aren't interested..
The NFL has been around for 80+ years, but has only been around in it's current format for about 40.. I'd give it time, if it doesn't catch on everywhere I'd be surprised..
God knows rap music and rap culture caught on, I think this will too
I'm not saying either is better though, I just grew up with the NFL so I'll watch that more closely..
You know, all that penalty shot stuff I can live with.
NO MORE STRETCHERS!!!!!!!!!!
The whole "pretending to be hurt" thing is the single WORST thing about soccer. It's absolutely ridiculous, and something needs to be done about that.
I was watching people talk about the thing with Rooney and Ronaldo (the Portugese one) and it got me thinking that Rooney doesn't look like the type who would flop around like a little girl. He looks like a really tough guy, while Ronaldo looks a little "soft" to me. Maybe I'm wrong, but I actually started liking that Rooney guy during the World Cup, because he looks like a real badass
