The Miami Dolphins placed Pennington on the reserve-injured list to create a roster spot for quarterback Tyler Thigpen, who was acquired Tuesday from the Kansas City Chiefs for an undisclosed 2010 draft pick.
Pennington hurt his right shoulder in the third quarter Sunday at San Diego, an injury that leaves his career in jeopardy.
The 33-year-old has since elected to undergo a third surgery to repair a torn capsule in his shoulder, according to the Miami Herald.
Dr. James Andrews will perform the procedure on Friday in Birmingham, Ala., the newspaper reported. Andrews previously operated on Pennington's shoulder in 2004 and 2005.
Thigpen shores up depth behind second-year pro Chad Henne, who is expected to make his first NFL start Sunday against Buffalo. Henne went 10-for-19 for 92 yards with an interception after replacing Pennington. Rookie Pat White is the Dolphins' other quarterback.
Thigpen, a third-year pro, went 1-10 as a starter for the woeful Chiefs last year after both Brodie Croyle and Damon Huard went down with season-ending injuries. He threw for 2,608 yards with 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
Kansas City acquired Matt Cassel in the offseason, and Thigpen lost a battle this year with Croyle for the No. 2 job.
Thigpen is excited about the move to Miami, even though the Dolphins are 0-3, Thigpen's agent, Joel Turner, said.
"It's not like that team is short on talent -- they won the division last year," Turner said. "It's a wonderful opportunity. Nobody does it like Bill Parcells. For Bill Parcells to believe in Tyler speaks volumes about Tyler."
Parcells may have Wildcat duty in mind for Thigpen, who ran a spread offense last year with the Chiefs. At 225 pounds, he's a powerful runner and the first quarterback in Chiefs history to score a touchdown three ways: as a passer, rusher and receiver.
Henne is expected to get an extended opportunity as a starter. Taken in the second round of the 2008 draft, he has been considered Pennington's heir apparent for more than a year.
The Dolphins will be Thigpen's third organization. He was a seventh-round draft pick by Minnesota in 2007.
I have to say, completely jazzed about this move. I love Thigpen, hope it works out for him in Miami and he gets a shot.

He actually looked promising and that was with the Kansas City Queefs, what pisses me off is they are completely writing off Pat White. He should be given a chance IMO

eh? Pat Whites still on his first chance, a rookie project QB who didn't even project as there future full time starter, still is a rookie project qb who doesn't project to be there full time starter. I don't think they've given up on him, dispite his shittacular stats through preseason.
Thigpens ran a NFL offense with moderate to good results, more than I can say about Pat White or Chad Henne at the moment.

He could have at least gotten some snaps last game

What are you going to do if the kid isn't ready? You can't just throw a rookie in there and expect him to grasp everything by week 3 of the season. I'm sure he'll be worked in there but hes never played the wildcat in his life, never played wide reciever or played at a NFL Speed. Of course it doesn't help that teams are starting to shut down the Wildcat and they can't afford to run it as much.
I'm admitedly not a Pat White fan, I think he works out as a gimmick in a offense that doesn't even account for a quarter of the snaps. But you have to take projects like White slowly, his accuracy and footwork are so off its not even funny, just take a gander at his Preseason and his play against Atlanta.

Thats why he needs to get practice snaps, Chad Pennington can only get you so far and they need to realize that this is where the Jets screwed up we put all our faith and him and he continuosly got injured

Umm what? Everything ToL just said was explaining why he shouldn't be thrown into a game and your saying that's why he should be thrown into a game. Like Shaun said, he's a project QB that you have to take slow. Giving him "practice snaps" aren't gonna help his progression much and plus the Dolphins are more worried about winning games. They're not going to throw plays away in a regular season game just to give him some experience. Maybe when they're out of play off contention that'd be okay, but they're 0-3 and need every play they can get. Pat White's gonna need about 3 more seasons before he has hopes of even starting imo.

I think Pat White could have some success at QB if they gave him a chance.
Obviously they don't feel comfortable doing that yet so it is what it is.
They are just looking to go in a different direction. They obviously want someone who is proven in the NFL and has a strong arm. That isn't Pat White at the moment.

Do you know what practice is? I'm just saying they could put a little more effort in developing him, they just put him in if they wanna do a wildcat play. I agree he needs time but what does Thigpen honestly bring thats such an upgrade?

Re: Dolphins Trade For Tyler Thigpen, Pennington Done For The Year
Pat White will get a chance, but it probably won't be until next year or the year after. He has some happy feet and other footwork issues. From what I read, the Dolphins want him to learn to rely on his arm to get him out of situations instead of his legs. Using the legs as a last resort kind of thing(which will in turn, make his speed more effective).
Also, Pat White, barring another injury, will most likely not see playing time under center, due to the fact that he is listed as the Emergency QB.
