In return, the Patriots received a first-round draft choice in 2011.
Seymour was in the final year of the four-year extension he signed in 2006. He was due to make $3.685 million.
"From nearly the day he arrived in 2001, Richard Seymour established himself as one of our premier players for nearly a decade," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Sunday. "His presence has been felt as a force on the field, a respected man off it and a multiyear champion."
The 29-year-old Seymour was drafted by the Patriots sixth overall in 2011, and started 105 of 111 games over eight seasons. He made 460 tackles and 39 sacks, and in 2002 was selected to the first of five consecutive Pro Bowls.
Seymour, who earned three Super Bowl titles with the Patriots, matched his career high with eight sacks in 2008.
"Any transaction we make is with the goal of what is best for our team and, as difficult as it is to part ways with a player of Richard's stature, many factors were taken into account when we considered this trade," Belichick said.
"As an organization, we feel the trade with Oakland brings sufficient value and is in the long-term interest of the club," he added. "We are extremely grateful for the huge impact Richard's elite level of performance had on our success and we wish him the very best during the rest of his career."
In a corresponding move, the Patriots reached agreement Sunday with free-agent guard Kendall Simmons, a source close to the player told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Simmons will fill the roster spot vacated by Seymour.
A former first-round pick of the Steelers, Simmons appeared in four games for Pittsburgh last season. He worked out for New England last week.
Kendall is expected to sign later Sunday.

Like I swear to god, Bill Belichick must just hang around the bay area compiling photos of various GMs in compromising situations. They always have a draft pick from San Francisco, San Diego or Oakland lately.
Its a great move for New Englands part, they get value on a 2010 free agent, they can franchise Wilfork to there hearts content. I could only imagine if (when...) Oakland tanks it up, the Patriots getting there hands on someone like Eric Berry or Taylor Mays in there secondary. Terrible, just terrible.

What the fuck? As a Pats fan, not only am I confused, I'm angry. We're already having some decisive problems with defense. Is a first rounder really worth it?

Considering its very likely to be a very high first round pick and it could be a strong draft class, it might be. But its a gamble.
I have to think there is something more behind the move than the Pats wanting the pick. I'm curious on Seymour's contract status. And how he has been doing so far this pre-season.

Thats the obvious part of the deal to me, Seymour is going to get top dollar from some team once he hits free agentcy next off season (probably the raiders). If you have to shell out the big money for one person on that line next year, Its a no brain to me that you spend that money on Vince Wilfork. Nose tackles dont grow on trees.
Im not a Patriots fan by any means, so I can only assume Jarvis Green would be the guy taking his spot? which is not a bad trade off in my mind, even if the trade busts and New Englands defense is worse than ever. Like you said its a high draft pick and theres a lot of options to move in any which direction to get the player(s) that BB wants.
Its worth noting that assuming the new CBA gets done next year could also be the first year with a rookie cap which = less money spent.

Still, there's no sign of defensive lineman Richard Seymour in Oakland.
Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Raiders have freed up $1.5 million in cap space in order to absorb Seymour's base salary of nearly $3.7 million -- if/when/if Seymour arrives.
Specifically, the contracts of offensive lineman Cornell Green and Paul McQuistan have been restructured.
Meanwhile, Pats coach Bill Belichick, director of player personnel Nick Caserio, and defensive coordinator Dean Pees were mum on the matter, per Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald.
"We don't have the rights to Richard, so I can't really speak to that," Belichick said. "There isn't really anything I can say about him or his situation. I'll pass on that."
Raiders coach Tom Cable said Monday that Seymour's absence relates to the resolution of financial issues between Seymour and the Patriots. Patriots spokesman Stacey James has said that he is aware of no such issues.
So this thing is officially bizarre.
And we love every minute of it.
Peter King is saying Seymour might not even report to raiders camp...could be a disaster for Oakland if he doesn't.
