Pacman Jones Messes Up Chance With The Bluebombers

Cornerback Pacman Jones, released by the Dallas Cowboys in February, has agreed to a one-year deal with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL.

"It'll be a good experience for me to get back in game shape and compete and play football, which I like to do," Jones told SI.com, which first reported the story. "I'm real happy for the opportunity that's been given to me. Of course it's disappointing to me to not be playing in the NFL. But things happen and you have to adjust."

Jones, 25, chose the CFL over the inaugural United Football League, Jones' agents told SI.com. One of the factors was money -- contract details were not immediately known -- but Jones also will be able to play on both sides of the ball in the CFL, which still has 10 weeks remaining in its season. The four teams in the UFL will be playing a six-game schedule beginning in October.

"He's still young and has a lot of playing days ahead of him," Jones' attorney, Worrick Robinson, said. "If the CFL deal works out, it will be a good opportunity for him to get back on the field and show what he can do."

The Cowboys acquired Jones from the Tennessee Titans during the draft in April 2008, after he was suspended by the league for the entire 2007 season following multiple off-field incidents while with the Titans.

But during the 2008 season, Jones was suspended for six games by the NFL after getting into an alcohol-related scuffle in October with a team-provided bodyguard at a Dallas hotel. He spent part of that suspension in an alcohol rehabilitation program.

Expected to give the Cowboys a boost on defense and special teams, Jones had 31 tackles and no interceptions in his nine games (six of them starts). He averaged only 4.5 yards on 21 punt returns, with a long of 18 yards.

Before going to Dallas, Jones was arrested six times and involved in 12 instances requiring police intervention after Tennessee drafted him in the first round in 2005.

Robinson said there had been discussions with "a number of NFL teams" and there had been hopes Jones would be brought into a training camp. No offers were made, however, leaving the CFL as the next best opportunity for Jones to regain his footing.

"Another equation for NFL teams is what his conduct will be off the field and on the field," Robinson said. "It is a good opportunity for him to show the teams in the NFL that he has matured, that he's concentrating on the game and concentrating on his family and trying to leave the past in the past."

John Murphy, Winnipeg's director of player personnel, called the acquisition of Jones a "win-win" situation on and off the field, according to SI.com.

"From a marketing standpoint, a business standpoint and a football standpoint, I could go to 100 NFL training camps and every preseason game and more people will hear and know about the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the next two weeks -- from the coverage we'll receive -- than in the last 10 years," he told SI.com.

"If I was in the same position in the NFL I might have a lot more reservations," Murphy added, according to SI.com. "... There isn't a better football player who's not in the NFL, at 25 years old, who's ready to play football, is going to play with a chip on his shoulder, and is going to bring some fun and excitement to our team, our locker room, our city, and our league."
a nice little turn of events I guess, I don't know how he'll fair in the CFL though with the string of names that come over and fail. But I guess if Willie Middlebrook can do it, most NFL quality CBs should be able to make the switch.

Re: Pacman Jones Signs With The Winnipeg Bluebombers

Adam Jones (I won't use that nickname) can't get a job with the NFL, so he goes to the CFL? Maybe if he learns to stay out of trouble he might get a job with the NFL again next year.

Re: Pacman Jones Signs With The Winnipeg Bluebombers

I obviously don't care about Pacman. He wasn't a change man when he was with the Cowboys, after a year suspension for the 2007 NFL season. I'll have to wait and see if he can really change his attitude before he makes his way back to the NFL.

Re: Pacman Jones Signs With The Winnipeg Bluebombers

I live in Winnipeg and the city isn't all that excited, we have a hard ass coach who coaches military style (like unless the bone is sticking out you should be playing) and enough trouble makers as it is.

And really our defense is pretty fucken amazing we just have 0 offense.

But this helps our KR and PR as it takes our top RB off the field in those situations.

Unfortunately for Pacman we have shitty stripclubs in Winnipeg.

Its a good thing he didn't end up playing in Montreal or even Ottawa. The guy would have been too making making it rain in the clubs to even make it out to his games....

"It is unfortunate that this situation became public; however, our position has remained consistent," Blue Bombers coach Mike Kelly said in a statement. "We will pursue athletes that we believe will contribute to our organization on and off the field.

"We have completed our assessment and due diligence and at this time we will not be pursuing the services of Adam Jones."

Jones' attorney, Worrick Robinson, told The Associated Press on Tuesday he had been in "consistent negotiations" with a CFL team, but wouldn't say which one.

Jones is a former first-round draft pick of the Tennessee Titans who has twice been suspended by the NFL for off-field incidents — including for the entire 2007 season — and was released in February by the Dallas Cowboys.
Well that fails, but they signed Carlos Rogers, fantastic.

Well, late yesterday the gang that couldn't shoot straight announced they were no longer not interested.

We're not making this up.

In a release issued by the Bombers at 7:30 p.m., head coach Mike Kelly says the team completed its "due diligence" and won't be pursuing Jones's services.

Interesting, because Tuesday afternoon the same Mike Kelly said the club had already done its due diligence, claiming the Bombers had far more information than the rest of us.

NO INTEREST IN CFL

At that point, this signing was very much alive, regardless of what the Bombers said. Virtually a done deal, other than hustling Pacman across the border and getting his name on the pact.

So what changed?

Jones made a lengthy internet appearance on streaming video, that's what, a video in which he looked and sounded exactly like what he is: a loser who had absolutely no interest in the CFL, other than using it to sucker another NFL team into throwing money at him.

Make it rain, Pacman.

"Don't throw no dollars at me," a shirtless Jones, flexing for the camera, said at one point. "If you want to throw somethin' at me, throw me an NFL contract, man."

If there was a theme to his video -- and the thing was so disjointed you couldn't help but wonder if the guy was actually jointed, if you know what I mean -- it was that Jones was going to cash his Winnipeg cheques and get out of Dodge faster than a Cadillac XLR on nitro.

"I've got a clause in my contract, when I get a call from an NFL team I can go over," he said. "I actually got two calls today, so if they tell me tomorrow that Pacman's back, that'd be a bummer for all my Winnipeg fans."

The video, which streamed live Tuesday evening and was readily available on the web yesterday -- how'd you enjoy it, Lyle Bauer? -- began with Jones saying he'd signed to play in the new UFL.

"Go to the UFL and do my thing and get ready for a playoff run in the NFL, you know what I'm sayin'?"

That's when someone called Jones, live, and presumably told him what league he was really going to.

Gotta love that commitment, Pac.

Throughout, fans chatted with the guy, some from Winnipeg. One told him it was cold here.

"Pain is only temporary," Jones said. "Besides, I'm only gonna be there for eight weeks... or shorter."

'PAID FOR!'

For 44 minutes, Jones came across as a complete imbecile, bragging about his luxurious home and getting his girlfriend to show off her engagement ring: "Y'all know what 41/2 karats look like in one stone? Paid for!"

This was a man determined to redo his image? A man trying to leave a past of drunken thuggery and violence behind?

At one point, Jones was asked about smoking dope.

"I won't be smokin' anything," he assured. "Cause I'm on probation."

But just wait until I'm off, man.

The Bombers should thank their lucky stars Jones made this video when he did.

What if they'd already signed him?

Check that. The truth is, there's nothing in the video that usurps anything on Jones's rap sheet, which includes incidents of spitting on and slugging women, biting a police officer and lending his Cadillac to his drug trafficking buddies.

It's just that in the video, the guy's character, or lack of it, was right there in front of you.

Some 44 minutes of due diligence not even Lyle Bauer could ignore.
Well there you have it, a idiot is still a idiot.

Re: Pacman Jones Signs With The Winnipeg Bluebombers

So he released a video saying he would abandon the Blue Bombers the second that a NFL team was interested in signing him? That just makes him look like dick. Same thing with any UFL team stupid enough to sign him (especially if they let him have the same contract stipulation that Winnipeg supposedly offered him). Does anybody even care about Jones anymore?
