Boston is in a tough spot. They're really over the cap and have major FAs coming.
From what I understand they will be at $73 million if Eddie House exercises his option or $70 million if they don't.
That's over the salary cap which means they have 1 mid-level and maybe one bi-annual exemption (don't know if it's this year or not).
But at $70 million, that means they will be over the luxury tax threshold as well. Every $$$ they spend is double that. My understanding is that the C's are not that financially well off, either, and they aren't looking to add payroll (Posey, anyone?)
On the payroll: KG, Pierce, Allen, Perkins, Rondo, Rony Allen, Scal, JR Gidden, Bill Walker, and House if he picks up his $3 million option (dunno if he will).
Who I think is definitely gone: Mikki Morre, Starubury,
The team can pick up Pruitt's option for under $1 mil and prolly will, but won't matter.
Also Rondo and Perkins will need extensions soon (rondo after next year, Perkins the year after), though Ray Allen's salary goes away and even if re-signed will be very much reduced.
So, what do the celtics do with Big Baby and Powe. No way they can keep both. Can they even keep one? If someone offers Big Babby 3 years and $13 million, does Boston match? That's nearly $8 million hit next season for him! And they also have to pay their #1 draft pick.
They can try to free up some room with trades, but no one is taking Scal and/or Allen for free. Then if House opts out, that leaves no backup guards at all if they don't sign him for more than $3 mil. Their only other option is to trade Ray Allen, but I just don't see it.
If Boston isn't willing to shell out the $$$, and I don't think they are, I think this was their last gasp. Unless they can find a diamond in the rough again, their bench is going to be so weak I have a hard time seeing them being able to win it all without a major move.
Should be an interesting off-season for them if all this is true.

wait are you saying Magic Johnson is black, has AIDS and has it better than ME?
he'll get a huge contract actually. Way more than 3 years 13 mill.
Mikki Moore is easily gone next year.
Marbury is an interesting case actually. Many think he'll be gone, but I don't think there are many people who want him. He's a vet and has a ton of money. It's a possibility he talks with Garnett and stays with Boston for one more year. He had a few small glimpses of promise in the playoffs, but honestly hasn't proved himself enough to be a superstar in the league.
3 younger guys to watch for.
Bill Walker is a very good player should step up this year.
Gabe Priutt is another guy who will step up. Guys good.
J.R. Giddens guy was nasty on the Utah Flash, should get some decent minutes.
Look at everyone's payroll not many teams are in good shape.
It seems crazy but the Celtics could make a trade of Ray Allen, and Scal and get a huge return.
Certain teams are so over, that need to shed payroll.
Scal is a good midlevel guy with an expiring contract, and Ray Allen is a huge contract that also is expiring.
I'd laugh my ass if Bill Walker does anything good in the NBA, hes such a punk with hardly enough skill to back up his talk. Maybe if you count good as being Tony Allen v.2 and playing defense off that bench but thats all I could see him doing if he survives playing with KG.
However if they trade Allen it could get interesting, I think that if they have any interest in staying near the top of the leauge they have to start dealing there oldies soon.
I think Big Baby is going to sign with Boston, but with the luxury tax we will be looking at paying out 8+ a year, and some here are concerned that he will just gain too much weight. I personally don't see it happening, but I can see where the concern comes from.
I have ZERO interest in bringing Marbury back either. While he was a good soldier here, he is a notorious bitcher.
